Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day

World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The actual fighting between the Allies and Germany, however, had ended seven months earlier with the armistice, which went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Armistice Day, as November 11 became known, officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later. On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
In 1968, new legislation changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11 was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.
Tomb of the Unknowns

Official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day center around the Tomb of the Unknowns.
To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil.
At 11 a.m. on November 11, a combined color guard representing all military services executes "Present Arms" at the tomb. The nation's tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath and the playing of "Taps."
Unknown Soldier Identified

On Memorial Day (which honors U.S. service people who died in action) in 1958, two more unidentified American war dead, one from World War II and the other from the Korean War, were buried next the unknown soldier of World War I.
A law was passed in 1973 providing interment of an unknown American from the Vietnam War, but because of the improved technology to identify the dead, it was not until 1984 that an unidentified soldier was buried in the tomb.
In 1998, however, the Vietnam soldier was identified through DNA tests as Michael Blassie, a 24-year-old Air Force pilot who was shot down in May of 1972 near the Cambodian border. His body was disinterred and reburied by his family in St. Louis, Missouri.

Regardless of your politics, today is a day to remember and honor all those who have served and continue to serve this great nation. That includes my father (decorated WW2 vet), my great-grandfather (CSA, Civil War), Nephew (Iraq), Brother-in-law (Vietnam), my friends, all the good men on this forum, and all their fallen comrades.

My eternal thanks, and my deepest respect.
Cuss

I knew a man called him Sandy Kane
Few folks even knew his name
But a hero yes was he
Left a boy, came back a man
Still many just don't understand
About the reasons we are free

I can't forget the look in his eyes
Or the tears he cries
As he said these words to me

All gave some and some gave all
And some stood through for the red, white and blue
And some had to fall
And if you ever think of me
Think of all your liberties and recall

Some gave all

That's lovely. Trying to understand the connection between that and honoring all our veterans, past and present?

You can only do so much in 4:00 Cuss and I just started messing with the WMM.

The military fighting today are fighting with the same honor and determination as those who fought before to keep this country safe from those that wished to derail our way of life.Any day of the week we can see the results of the bad guys handiwork on TV,today I just thought it might be nice to put up a little of the flip side from the good guys, seeing as how its rarely shown to the US public. The US Veterans after all ,have always been the Good Guys, regardless of the conflict.

All this video showed was that we're 100 years ahead of these people in technology, and that we can pick them off in video game fashion when they actually make themselves available as targets.

I had hoped for something a little different - since we're honoring veterans. Something along the lines of all the fine work Base always relays to us through his correspondance. A collection of photos and videos of our soldiers actually doing all this work we supposodly never hear about. Helping with the hospitals, rebuilding the schools, protecting those who try to attend mosque etc. This is the stuff we're told will really make the difference in winning the hearts and establishing a democracy.

Videos like these have been available through centcom press briefings since the first gulf war (remember the laughs Stormin Norman got when he showed the video of us blowing up the bridge and the Iraqi that was running across it?). They aren't hidden from the public -- hell, the first few days of Shock 'N Awe were put to music by both MSNBC and FOXNews.

Little longer but a little more of what you appear to be asking for.

Was the photos of the WTC or the Americans hanging from the bridge what you thought I was asking for?

You spent a lot of time making these by the looks of it.

Wasn't really asking for anything actually - just thought the first one was more of a tribute to our overwhelming technological advantage than what you normally post about.
