My recommendation is to NOT buy at one of the big box retail stores. I personally would recommend either an ASUS laptop or a Dell laptop, only because of the Dell coupons that can be found on the internet (up to $750.00 off).

Do NOT buy an extended warranty. Most computers are outdated within 18 months of purchase.

1 GB RAM at a minimum. 80 GB HD at a minimum. Give me more details on what you plan on using this computer for and I will give you more recommendations.

Have a good day.

Pretty solid advice. You really cant get around 1 gig memory when buying new these days.

Chalkeater, would you have any information on the wireless internet...is anyone using it, and how fast is it?

When I say 'wireless' I mean from anywhere, not in your home.

goto dell and goto small business section. I just got mine 2 months ago for $579 after coupon. This thing is a 15.4 wide screen, 1gb, 2ghz, 80gigs, DVD-+RW, stripped of all software exept the OS. Model is Inpiron 1300. Ive loaded a bunch of apps and the speed is there only the start up/bootup has been slower. BOL
PS. find the dam coupon codes and you'll be set. It took me a while to find a good 1.

I got a three-year warranty on my Dell Latitude when I got it in August 2004, and I'm glad I did. My monitor just crapped out for the second time (first was about 8 months ago). I will be renewing the warranty soon.

If you get a Dell (I love mine), don't get an Inspiron...go for the Latitiude. The Inspiron's accessories (docking station, etc) are crap.
