This cost me $$$. Guy got lit up by the Pads on the last day of the yr to win them the division and he pitched on a losing team with non-impressive #'s. Should've been Carpenter or Hoffy

they were basically the exact same pitcher. I would have leaned Carpenter based on them making the playoffs, but hard to argue either way. That being said, I am surprised Carp didn't win it.

I had Carpenter for some change, BS pick by the Nat'l league, didn't want to give it to Carp two years in a row i guess...more dirty paper down the drain.

15 1st place votes for Webb and just 2 for Carp. Something isn't right about that. Hoffman actually finished 2nd

That's just stupid. There was no real dominant pitcher in the NL but I gotta think Carpenter was a better choice than Webb.

Carpenter should have got it by default...Webb wasn't that great down the stretch , that is a little odd....keep in mind though the vote is taken at the end of regular season, post season doesn't count towards it....

Maybe the writers looked at the way STL finished and were turned off by the entire team.

there was a stretch in august where Webb was HORRIBLE, Carpenter was the most dominant pitcher in the league at HOME at least, and pretty damn good on the road, plus his team made the playoffs at least. Worst Cy young winner in YEARS.

I feel bad for those that had CARPENTER with great future odds to win the award.

VIKING611 for one had a nice value wager on them.

Carpenter pissed away the Cy Young in September.

He had three pitiful starts that month...20innings, 30hits, 16er's.

Was a real bad time for Carpenter to pitch that badly... when the baseball writers were getting their three votes in order.

I can't see Hoffman winning the Cy Young over Webb, but Carp should have number 2 sitting on his mantle.

Webb pitched for a bad team and won games. Carp pitched for a good team and won games. Carp didn't accomplish as much as Webb.

Webb's numbers were on par and considering he pitches in a hitters park I think it was the right call.

With Hoffman not winning this year, closers can pretty much forget ever winning this award unless their ERA is ZERO. Webb had decent numbers, but nothing overwhelming. He started the yr 8-0 and finished 8-8 on a non-playoff team. Meanwhile, Hoffman led the league in saves had an ERA around 2, became the all-time saves leader (I know it isn't a career award). 16 wins and an ERA over 3 gets you a CY YOUNG?

Cy Young is turning over in his grave today. If Carpenter had won, it would have at least been justified, as St Louis was not a playoff team without him.
