i tried nine.com and got this message..

Free service POST access forbidden

HTTP POST requests under the free service are not allowed.

This means that the free service can be used for viewing web pages, but not for most interactive content and sites requiring logins.

We were forced to take this step because of the increasing number of hit-and-run attacks perpetrated by a small number of abusers. We apologise to the vast majority of users, but we can no longer afford to bear the cost and frustration of dealing with the consequences of abuse.

If you are seeing this and have purchased a PIN, then you probably forgot to type in your PIN on the login page and you are still using the free mode. You need to log out and log back in with your PIN.

If you purchase a PIN and it turns out that POST access does not work with a site that is important to you, we will refund your money and cancel the PIN. This is an exception to our usual no-refunds policy.

I would think there would be a little security risk bouncing to free proxy servers

My thoughts exactly. I for one wouldn't use a free proxy to access any account.

A few notes on passwords....
So far as them stealing your password by looking at the traffic between you and the book - it's possible, but unlikely. That depends primarily on the method that the book uses to encrypt your password on the way out. Most of them are plenty safe there.

The real risk, in my (not quite expert) opinion, is more closely related to phishing. If they see you going to pinnacle, they could serve you a fake pinnacle front page and forward you to a real "failed login" page after you entered the right password, and you'd never know the difference. I could also write an AJAX script that logged all of your keystrokes and sent them without your knowledge to a server, along with the website you were visiting at the time. Most sites like this have a browsing area at the top of the screen that this could be made to load in.

As far as bypassing book restrictions -

Yes this will solve IP based restrictions. But it is NOT perfect. You either use a non-anonymizing proxy and anyone can request information about your connection from your browser which is sent in the header of your communications with them, or you use an anonymizing proxy which generally strips headers - an easy thing to test for. There are several other ways to check if the IP you're connecting from is the IP your computer is on.

I've heard of betfair blocking anonymizing proxies (second-hand but not surprising), though I've not tested this myself as there are better solutions out there. If any of you know a safe way to get a canadian address/ID without buying a house there or becoming a citizen please hit me up and maybe we can exchange info.

I will offer a free proxy to anyone. :missingte

You'd have to be stupid to use a free proxy for anything that is secure to you (passwords, login info, email, etc.) :ohno:

Completely true. Be very careful, your common and garden free ones can easily be hacker honeypots or worse given all the Federal interest right nwo (Tor being the exception, it's good but slow and changes IPs all the time which messes logins up.).

See my thread here that discusses the whole thing of using proxies in more detail:

Protecting your IP to disguise the state and country you are logging on from..
