Good player, supposedly character issues. He's bounced around more than a pinball from school to school.
Every year there is a next big thing, takes a lot to be able to cope with that on a 18 year old's shoulders.

SC is recruiting up for a huge one year run to go with the new building. We'll see where programs like SC and Ohio State are in five years as the result of going after these sure to be one and done players. Schools like Duke and UNC won't bite, they won't promise the kids to be starters from game one and all these kids want are a chance to be on TV and to show off draft-worthy skills. Can't do that sitting on the bench.

Coach K would love to have Greg Oden as would Roy Williams.

Why didn't he go there then? They told him he had to be part of the program and would not be promised anything. SC and OSU had plenty of spots open and nothing to lose. My thought is the lower echelon of the big conferences are the biggest winners with the new age limits. Schools like Clemson, Arizona State, most of the Texas schools, and the like are sitting pretty with good atmospheres for spending a year while having plenty of spots open for superstars who just want to stick around a year. In all its a great rule because no way these kids learn more sitting on a bench in the NBA. Guys like Martell Webster would have been far better off getting a year in the college game last year and then heading to the pros this year. Oden is going to be a monster in the NBA if he stays healthy and this year will be important for his success.

Former Ohio high school basketball star Bill Walker, one of the players Bob Huggins pursued during his yearlong hiatus from coaching, signed a financial aid agreement with Kansas State on Friday and will join the team next month.
Walker, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound small forward, was considered one of the nation's top high school players last year.

Walker, who earned his high school diploma this fall through an accelerated program, has already enrolled at Kansas State as a part-time student.
The 19-year-old will be eligible to join the team on Dec. 16, meaning he could play the next day against Kennesaw State in Manhattan, in the first game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. That will be the 10th game for the Wildcats, who open their season Nov. 11 at home against William & Mary.
Walker is prohibited from working out with the team or with Kansas State's strength coaches until he becomes eligible.
"He's going to have to play himself into shape," Huggins said. "He's been running on his own, but that's not the same thing."
Walker, a native of Huntington, W.Va., became a high school star in Cincinnati, where he helped North College Hill win state championships in 2005 and 2006. He was a three-year starter and averaged 21.7 points and 10.1 rebounds as a junior.
This would have been his senior season, but Ohio athletic officials ruled he was ineligible because he had played one season as a freshman in Kentucky before enrolling at North College Hill as an eighth-grader.
Huggins took over at Kansas State in March, after being fired at Cincinnati in 2005. Because he was not affiliated with any school during his time away from coaching, he was not bound by NCAA rules limiting recruiting contacts.

Huggins spent 3 years recruiting both of these guys Mayo is the one he really wanted

The 6-foot-5 guard, ranked by several prep publications as the nation's top senior, transferred to Huntington High in September from Cincinnati's North College Hill High.
"Coach (Tim) Floyd has been an NBA coach and at the next level, and the city of Los Angeles is a great marketing city," Mayo said. "Hopefully, if everything goes well, I can market myself better for the next level."
The Trojans already have signed top-ranked players Davon Jefferson of Los Angeles, Leonard Washington of Lake Charles, La., and Marcus Simmons of Alexandria, La. Mayo, a Huntington native, is a two-time Associated Press Mr. Basketball for Ohio and was tournament MVP of this summer's national champion AAU 17-and-under team. He averaged more than 30 points, nine rebounds and seven assists per game last season at North College Hill.

Well, a guy like Oden doesn't have to be promised anything. He could walk on the court and start for any program in America, including Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc... even Florida. And if he didn't start, he would still log 30+ minutes a game.

Duke had plenty of spaces of fill this year. It wasn't that OSU "promised" him anything -- it just had its advantages over Duke. For one, Indy is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Columbus -- he is close to home & his family can watch him play more frequently.

NOt everyone wants to go to Duke. Oden chose between Mich St, IU, and Ohio St. He wanted to be close to his family. Ohio St also recruited by far the best class in the nation including his teammate Mike Conley who was a top 30 recruit.

Mayo is SICK. Played at North College Hill, a public school out of Cincinnati with Bill Walker (who just signed to play with Huggins :drink::drink::drink: at K-State this winter). They were a D2 school that frankly ran over all their competition (to compare, Lebron played D3 in Ohio I believe, which is actually worse). When they played against Division 1 powerhouses they either barely came up short or won there too. I was figuring he would wind up making his way to K State since Walker played AAU with him, and the DUI Coach has been recruiting like mad on them since he got canned by the Bearcats.

I wanted to see him live for the past couple years but the games were always sold out, and after they deemed Walker ineligible (because he played highschool while still in middle school), Mayo went back to his home in WV this year.

Definite good pick up for USC, although he'll likely only be there a season or two.

He should be a star in college, but I wouldnt consider him the next Lebron.

Lebron was a man among boys in high school and had he attended college he would have dominated.

Hell, most nights Lebron looks like a man among boys playing at NBA level.

OJ Mayo was not recruited by USC because Floyd figured he would go elsewhere. Mayo just faxed him his letter and basically said, Hey I'm coming.

Floyd even said this is a 1 yr rental but I don't think he's complaining.

weird thing is....USC never 'really' recruited him...he just faxed them a letter commitment, as his advisors told him to go to the LA based team. USC was never really on the radar & didnt receive any major recruitment from USC.

I guess his 'advisors' wanted him to go to LA for the market exposure, and the ability to put a below avg basketball program on his back. In essence, his 'advisors' sold him on USC.

Its amazing how whored out these basketball players are out of high school...advisors, 10 different high schools, sponsored camps, etc...it so rediculous.

oj mayo is legit.....everyone said he could have gone pro as a junior in high school.....his team huntington high will win it all again in wv.....they have 4 d-1 players.....mayo going to usc, patterson going to either fla. or kentucky, early who is going to okla, and another player that is starting to get a lot of interest....bill walker would have played with them also but he has used up all elig.....

mayo can do it all.....handle the ball, shoot 3's ,shoot off the dribble.....he had a press conference the other day announcing his decision.....they play 3-4 ranked national teams this year....
