As a Cardinal Fan, I will say Soriano will help them offensively when they are down 9 runs on a summer day in August going for the 40/40 club. Cubs mgmt dont' get it. Teams are built on pitching and defense up the middle. What do they have? Barrett who is an offensive catcher, Izturis who is a very good defensive player, Cedeno/Soriano at 2nd where neither can field a lick, and Soriano maybe in CF who is a butcher. They should have spent their 8 yr 132 million on the Japanese pitcher and Schmitt then maybe they would have something.

This a huge signing...

Funny how the Cubs are getting ripped for spending $$$...

Last year they all but had Furcal signed...then the LA Dodgers swept in and gave him a disgusting offer...Cubs did not match...

Soriano will play CF for the Cubs...

This is for certain...

The Cubs will no longer be out HR'd at Wrigley...

CF Soriano
2B DeRosa
1B DLee
3B Ramirez
C Barrett
RF Jones
LF TBD
SS Izturis

I think the Cubs will sign Lugo to be their SS...

Hendry is far from being finished here.

power hitting vs pitching, I'll take pitching

The Cubs tried that...

Everyone knows what happened...

They are now going to mash teams at Wrigley field.

Piniella wanted a homefield advantage...he has one now.

They have some pitching... Rich Hill came on Very Strong at the end of the season...he will be a big part of the rotation.

Rich Hill...Sean Marshall...

Hendry is also reportedly trying to sign two additional pitchers. He has targeted Meche, Lilly, Batista and Kei Igawa.

I agree...

Problem is the market is crap...

After Zito and Schmidt there is not alot...

I think Piniella just wants a bunch of arms to head to Arizona with and then he will find the three best to accompany Z and Hill.

What surprises me most about this contract (except it doesn't surprise me at all when I realize it's the hapless Cubs) is not really the $17 mil, considering how crappy the free agent market is this year, but 8 years?!?!

Once again we can say IF Wood and Prior are healthy...

Wood is throwing now...and is doing ok...

The contract he signed had "incentives" for ending games.

He will be in the pen all season...only question is...does he take Dempster's job.

Piniella is not counting on Prior to be one of the 5...he may need surgery anyways.
