Are the Red Sox really going to sign this guy because it doesn't make sense. They spend $51.1 million just to talk to him and then have to sign him for at least another $40 million for another for 4 yrs. Doesn't make sense. They could spend that money on three other guys including Zito. I understand the guy has crazy numbers in Japan, but this is not Japan. They say he makes his living keeping the ball up in the strike zone. Frank Thomas must be drooling.

I'm really thinking they just overbid to stop the Yanks from signing him, they don't come to a deal with him and he goes back to Japan and the Red Sox get their $51.1 million back.

Make sense?

None of it makes sense...what kind of goofy rule is that? Outbid all of baseball so no one can sign him and then get your money back...it can't be that easy can it?

conditionally spending $51.1 million just to bid on a Japanese player.

They don't sign him, they get their money back.

I know they do...it just makes no sense,,, they must have some idea that the team bidding 51 million is serious ...it can't be as easy as saying 'here's 51 million, now we can't sign you' so no one else will.

Has to be. Look at it from the other way. If this guy demands something crazy like 70 million for 4 years and the Red Sox say "go to hell", then Boston can't be out 51 million.

Would make a good prop, I'd take no at +money. Guy would be getting A-Rod money ( costwise to Boston) having never pitched an inning of MLB.

Exactly. It defies logic.

In my opinion its a package deal. The Sox's have a pretty good idea what the number to actually get Matsuzaka signed thru Scott Boras his agent and in return Boston whispers in Boras ear that they have an interest in Drew which ended up in him waiving his contract with LA out of the blue. So if both of them end up in Boston then im sure this is the case.

I still say Boston just wants to keep Daisyduke away from NYY.

I'm so upset with the Red Sox right now. If they sign this guy I will actually be happy about it.

The fact they didnt sign Cab and Traded Han Ram who wins rookie of the year just disgusts me. Who is even going to play short next year? This isnt the Oakland A's and money ball Theo, get it together man.

Red Sox fans have no room to bitch about the yankees payroll now. Paying 50 mil just for the RIGHT to pay a pitcher 10 mil a year that has never pitched in the majors before.
It makes me laugh that they will spend that kind of money just because they are so afraid of the big bad Yankees.

Not a dumb move by the sox.

Extra sales of tv rights, merchandise etc of a whole new country. Lots of ways to capitalize on this guy if he is signed.

He's not exactly the only Japanese player ever to play MLB, or the first. I think his nationality doesn't bring that much interest, maybe if he were Klingon or something the interest would be there.

Still doesn't equal 51 million. Boston did this to improve there on field product. While im sure they be alot of Matsuzaka shirt sold in Japan the Red Sox's have to split it between every MLB team so the return on investment will be based by what he does on the field.
