I am driving back from a friend's the other night around 9pm. I pull up to a stop sign, stop, look both ways and start to go. Just then I notice movement out of the corner of my eye. I see a guy on a bike cruising down the sidewalk quickly approaching my vehicle. I punch it and go.

About four blocks away I pull into a convienience store for a beverage. I go in and look at the selection of brews. Ding, someone comes in the store. I see the guy on the bike walking my way in a determined way. This guy appears to be one of our city's upstanding urban recyclers. Next thing I hear is, "hey azz hole, you almost hit me" as I am walking to the counter. I decide I am going to pretend I didn't just hear that. This guy is about 55, scruffy,5'7 and 150 lbs. I set my beverage on the counter for the clerk to ring up. Again I hear " hey azz hole, you almost hit me." The clerk looks at me like I need to respond before he can ring me up. :icon_conf I turn to the recycler and say, "I am sorry sir, I didn't see you. I have had a really bad night."

Clerk finally rings me up. Recycler, somewhat perplexed, turns some wheels in his head and responds, "Yeah, that's a dark street they really need to put in a street light there." I say nothing as I grab my bag.

Recycler follows me out saying, "Hey it's no big deal guy. That sort of thing happens all the time." He even tries to shake my hand! I just nod at him and get in my car and drive away.

I have never gone to jail or been arrested.

Am I a puszy or did I do the right thing?

why is this even an issue? You DID almost hit him. He was on the sidewalk and you failed to see him. Did I miss something here?

Should have told the old guy how luck and stupid he is. Anybody riding a bicycle or a motorcycle knows that they have to assume the people in the cars are not going to see them and act accordingly. I respect how you handled the situation so well....good job!

P.S. If you do ever get arrested.....keep quiet and give your lawyer a chance.

I think you handled it well. I have a short temper and would have snapped. Proof in theory that you can kill them with kindness.

You should have said "And you almost hit me so we're even; get a job".

hahahaha

Or you should've said, "yeah...I'm pissed. Can't believe I missed."

Then punched him in the face and taken a shit on his bike.

LOL. Remind me to make sure I am well lighted when I ride in your neighborhood SkinsRaj....eventhough you'd never ever see me on the sidewalk. Could have been arrested many times for riding drunk on a bicycle, fo' sure.

P.S. Heard from Old KY Jelly lately?

A friend of mine was backing his car up in a parking lot when he heard a "thud". He got out of his car and there was a homeless Native American man saying "you hit me". Just give me $10 and I won't say anything to the cops.

:missingte

My friend didn't give him any money. The guy was a drunk who was trying to scam him for alcohol money.

Did this guy appear to be homeless? If so, maybe he was trying to scam you for money.

You did exactly the right thing. You don't have to nut up and fight over shit like that. Fight over stuff worthwhile. You did right and he was glad you said sorry and he went away feeling better about the world.

Sounds like some scene from 'Crash'

The guy did appear homeless. One of the reasons I didn't stick around to chit chat with the bloke is that I got the impression he would hit me up for spare change for "a bite to eat" or whatever line he might use.

Now that I think of it, he probably rides the sidewalks on his stealth bike hoping some working stiff hits him so he can cash a check.

Life in the city.
