He was just on the Dan Patrick Show talking about Tyler Landis and it got me thinking how many people actually think this guy was clean? True he was a good athlete before cancer but he was not the elite athlete he later became. To me it is obvious that while fighting cancer, the drugs Bristol Myers Squibb gave him were pumped full of new synthetic steroids undetectable to testing. No one can come back from where he was and become the best in his field again in such a short time, much less for 7 years.

Yeah...I would say, many think he doped.

It just doesn't get talked about, considering the circumstances of Cancer & being a 'nice guy.'

If he were an arrogant prick, then he would likely get the Barry Bonds treatment...anybody agree?

The real question is whether he was the catcher or pitcher in his relationship with John Anthony... err Matthew McConaughey

I think he was clean. The guy had a phenomenal cardiovascular system to begin with. Perversely I think the cancer was beneficial in a cycling sense because before he got sick he was top heavy as a cyclist, ie a fairly muscular upper body. The cancer ravaged him and he lost a lot of muscle mass which in turn made him lighter and the less weight he had to carry, the faster and longer he could ride. Besides he lived in France and the French police could have searched his house anytime they wanted.

He seems like too much of an arrogant prick to be the catcher.

Then again, his penis is probably almost as dysfunctional as mine is, so maybe not. Who knows. Somebody hook up a YouTube link.

I think he was and is clean, but it seems like every day we see an athlete we hold in high regard do something stupid or get caught juicing, so I guess you never really know.

In my opinion, I would have thought it would be impossible to dominate that race for 7 years without getting some kind of chemical assistance.

tate, I would have to disagree with you about Benoid, Bonds and Jackie Joyner Kersee (or Flo-Jo). The sports they compete in are of the explosive fast twitch, power, anaerobic sports. Very little cardio required but a lot of muscle mass - hence the major temptation to use steroids to build that muscle. The Tour is a cardio race not a sprint. Like I said, bulky muscles a la Bonds or Benoid can only hurt you when you're trying to climb the Pyrenees.

Romanowski was the most obvious of them all, he was on his last legs at the end of the 49ers dynasty then somehow came back to play what seemed like an entire career with other teams.

If Jan Ullrich, long time rival of Lance Armstrong, was caught for doping, then I'm sure Lance has been on them. Competition was very fierce between these two and I'm sure both used something to get the edge in the rivalry.

Not all steroids are designed for building muscle mass. What about EPO and the manipulation of red and white blood cells designed to increase oxygen production? These are the designer drugs that the cyclists are on, not muscle building steroids.

sy, yeah I know EPO, darbopoetin etc is designed to boost red blood cells. I was pointing out that you can't compare the explosive sport athletes to the endurance athletes. Just because Bonds et al use muscle building steroids does not meant that aerobic sport athletes must be on them too. Eg, men's 10000m record has fallen from over 27:13 by Mamede in the mid-80's to 26:17 by Bikele (Ethiopa) 2005. He also owns the 5k record too. Does that mean Bikele was probably using EPO type drugs? I doubt it. Miruts Yifter won the bronze for 10k in 1972, gold in 5k and 10k 1980 and he probably would have won in Montreal 1976 except for the African nations boycott. Was he doing steroids then? I doubt that too. There has never been even a whisper about African distance runners doing blood boosters yet they've DESTROYED every old record from 800m to the marathon. I would hardly consider Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania to be hotbeds of steroid research but their dominance is so complete as to be laughable. These are tremendously talented runners who are pushing the limits of human endurance. Why is so hard then to believe that Armstrong is clean? The guy had cancer and beat it. He was also tested at the Cooper Institute and has the highest ever recorded VO2 - AT THE AGE OF 16.
