I am thinking of buying an HDTV. Can someone please explain all the different options? What is the difference between LCD and plasma, etc. Thanks.

Plasmas are on their way out and being replaced by LCD's (newer technology)

Size of screen is the key. Plasma is best for large screen, say over 40 inches. LCD is better lower. DLP is a good bargain choice, but chances are good you won't say it is the best picture. One thing most people do is buy too big a screen. There are some online calculators that used in conjunction with a measurement of distance from couch to TV can give you good advice. I have seen a number of people with 60 inch screens 8-10 feet from the couch and that isn't good. Clarity isn't as good and bigger isn't necessarily better. Save the money and get a better picture by focusing on the right screen size.

One thing though is I would suggest not buying one right now unless you really have to have it. The new 1080p format is supposed to come out with force in a few months and that is the real picture you want, what HD is really all about. In six months you might kick yourself for buying too soon is what I have heard. Even if you don't buy 1080p then, it is supposed to be so compelling that the lesser sets are set to fall drastically to compete.

Maybe for now best thing is to buy something small, a 26 or 32 inch LCD for under a dime and then relegate it to a second room and buy the good one a year from now.

I just upgraded my electronics. Got a philips 20 inch lcd for my room, and 42 inch for my living room. Love it, make sure you get HDTV though or it's useless. This may seem obvious, but I got my Mom a sony lcd for her birthday in June and didn't find out till a month ago that she didn't have hdtv (she thought she did).

I just finally got my 3 TVs up in my entertainment room. (still not in the damn house yet, painting the trim is taking forever!!!!!!) HDTV is unreal. When i first got it going, I put a game on in HD then a game in regular next to each other on the 2 32 LCDs and i was like holy shit, regular def looks blurry, how do I always watch this? My other TV is a Sony Vega btw, 55 inch only does 720 though I think, it was last years model, got it for 1399 or so. Still kickass though
