This is a pretty good bowl the for 6-6 Hawks. They always seem to travel well.

IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa has accepted a bid to play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30, school officials said Tuesday.

The Hawkeyes (6-6) will face a Big 12 opponent. According to bowl officials, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Kansas State are the likeliest candidates.

Iowa will be making its third appearance in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. Its 2001 win over Texas Tech drew the second-largest crowd in Alamo history.

What a joke with 6-6 teams going to bowls. Don't blame them for taking the offers but ridiculous that 6-6 gets you eligible.

The ALAMO BOWL loves the Hawkeyes.........as all bowls do.

One of the best, if not the best, travel team in the nation.

Hope the Hawkeyes can continue to improve on their already great bowl record.

LOL You Iowa people crack me up. 6-6 deserves nothing. Maybe if Iowa had anything else going for it people would not travel for this team so much. Comming into the season you guys thought that Iowa could compete. Turns out the QB is way overated.

I love football, but there are TOO many bowl games today.

A bowl game should be a reward for a team that has had a good regular season. A team with a .500 record should NOT be eligible for a bowl. Period.

Absolutely, especially if it causes a team with a winning record to be left out. For instance, I think San Jose St. definitely deserves to go to a bowl but there's a good chance they will not get an invite because of the shitty 6-6 BCS conference teams. Travashamockery.

Don't get me wrong. The more games, the more the opportunity to win and lose money. But, I would really like to see a maximum of 10 bowl games. The top 20 teams in the nation. That's all. A bowl game should NOT have an empty seat. Watch these early bowl games. Empty seats galore.

The same can be said for boxing. How many different federations do we have? Who is the champion?

Less is more.

Yeah, it's great. Bring a 6-6 team to a bowl game. They will spend as much money as they bring in. Bring the band and school officials that could give a shit about the football program. Give them all a few days in the sun while the players have to practice for another month. Great excuse for the coaches to have a second spring practice only in the early winter. I wonder how many of the upperclassmen would vote to go. I would bet money (it's OK to say that on this site isn't it) that on a team like Iowa where there were high expectations and they've been to bowl games every year, there would be quite a few players vote against going after the season they had. They should pay the players out of the bowl payback. They deserve it rather than bringing some gay tuba player or a chemistry professor who has no clue about football. Just my opinion.

It burns me more than anything when coaches are celebrated for taking their team to a Bowl Game "so many straight years" as if it is actually an accomplishment in this day and age. They compare their bowl appearances to the great coaches that were at the school before them when you actually had to win games to make it to bowls.

A joke that Iowa was invited. Can't blame them for accepting...but definitely not a team worthy of a bowl.

I don't like it either that the Hawks got such a good bowl, to even be invited to any bowl with that team is pushing it.

That said I'd be very careful fading the Hawks whoever they play. They will be hearing the same thing from the media and "experts" how underserving they were. The Hawkeyes should come into this game highly motivated and possibly find an opponent who takes them lightly or who isn't thrilled with going to San Antonio, happens all the time in the Bowl Games.

this is very true. and to top it off, iowa is not a bad football team. they PLAYED like a horrible football team down the stretch this year. but theyre not a bad football team. there are a lot of factors that will likely make the hawkeyes a logical "play ON" team this december. they don't deserve to go, but now that they're there, they will likely win.

So..............What did Iowa go to, 4 bowl games prior to 1980 while the two teams mentioned went to how many Rose Bowls before 1980?

Iowa may have a winning record in bowl games...

But this group stinks...

Picked by the so called experts to be a strong contender for the Big10 crown and a Nat'l Championship...:ohno:

How many Nat'l Championships has Iowa won?

And what is worse, is that Iowa jumped over Minny in the Big Eleven's bowl line-up, even though Minny just beat Iowa.

Get used to it guys. With a 12 game schedule for everyone now, the bowls have no choice but to take 6-6 teams. I heard 2 new bowls were being considered for next year. Unbelievable, but then again if that is what it takes to give a small program which has a good year a chance to play then so be it.

All I know is if I were a Hawkeye fan I would sit this year's game out. Why the hell travel to follow the team if they haven't done a thing to deserve playing in a bowl?

we all know the bowls aren't about putting the two "best teams" against one another. Once you get out of the bcs bowls, it's all about money. The teams that travel well, get an obvious advantage over those who don't. The alamo bowl could give a shit less whether they are leaving out san jose st, or whoever the team might be. It's who is going to bring the revenue in, of the eligible teams, which is why Iowa will always get the nod over more "deserving" teams. I've been a big Iowa fan for years, and yes they suck this year, but they love them here, and will follow wherever they go. I think you seen the way the fans are, if you watched college gameday, for the ohio st game in which they got their ass kicked. Corso and Herbstreit kept making reference to how they have never seen crowds like this, there were 5,000+ people for gameday, the biggest they had ever seen. Iowa brings 35-45000 fans to bowlgames, and why wouldn't you follow them if your a fan, it's 20 degrees here in late Dec/Jan, and 75 in the south. Take a week off, watch some football, drink some beer, why wouldn't you.

Up to 16 6-6 teams could get bowl invitations...Squawkeye fans can divide six wins into the $4 million they are paying their overrated coach to determine if they are getting their money's worth.

i think ferentz is a very good coach.
also the more bowls the more opportunitys for mismatches and teams not showing up for lesser bowls. great opportunity to win money imo.
