:scared: This may be the most stunning MLB contract I have ever seen.

Happy Thanksgiving Gary! :WTF:

Matthews, whose 7-year-old son lives in nearby Santa Monica, reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a $50 million, five-year contract with the Angels following a career year with the Texas Rangers.

"You spend so much time away from your family when you play baseball, and no amount of money can make up for that," Matthews told The Associated Press while driving to San Jose for Thanksgiving. "This move is a way for me to accommodate my son and be around him more."
Matthews' parents also live in Southern California. His father, known as "Sarge," also was a big-league outfielder, beginning his with the Giants. The younger Matthews has been called "Little Sarge."

I'm so appreciative that they gave me a chance to literally follow in my father's footsteps," Matthews said. "It would have been something just to have another Bonds and Matthews in the Giants' outfield. But this move was for my family."

Longtime San Francisco star Barry Bonds' father, Bobby, was a member of the Giants when Gary Matthews Sr. began his career.
The younger Matthews must pass a physical before the deal is completed. That won't happen before early next week because of the holiday.
Scott Leventhal, Matthews' agent, said his client made up his mind Wednesday morning.
"They were right there," Leventhal said of the Giants. "It was a very difficult decision. More than 10 teams kicked the tires. Everybody couldn't be more pleased."

Lets analize this a little.

Mathews will be 33 years old next season, he's played on 7 different teams in his 8 year career.

Mathews has never hit 20 homers in a season, he has had 2 seasons in his career above 11 homers.

Mathews has driven in more than 36 runs in a season twice!

Mathews has had over 100 hits in a season 2 times in his career.

Mathews has batted above .255 twice in his career.

Mathews has struck out 554 times while walking 308 in his career.

Mathews has scored over 72 runs in a season 1 time.

Mathews who is going to be 33 next season made 50 million dollars off of ONE season...

Congrats to the Angels for the worst free agent signing in MLB history, whether this works out or not this is a ridiculous signing.

This is very surprising. Bad baseball players are the most overpaid out of all atheletes, but this takes it to another level.

How do you give a guy who's had ONE year a 5 year deal like this, he was barely hanging on a couple years ago, bouncing from team to team...I always felt he had great potential but to give a guy like this 50 million dollars is crazy.

You have to love how players play out of this world in a walk year. I should try out for the majors. I'm still young & have a shot. Hell let me have one good year & I'm set for life.

He said it came down to the Giants or Angels...THANK GOD he chose the Angels. I would not be able to stomach that contract as a Giants fan.

No doubt he got overpayed, but as a rangers fan he did have a very good year and that was the best catch I've ever seen, bar none.

not a bad deal.

dude was a beast last year for the rangers and deserves it.

only if he is a bust would this be a bad deal, but he should make the all star team for years to come.

we like gary matthews jr.

The man, He should make the allstar team for years to come, dude, are you stoned, this has to be the most overpaid contract I have ever seen, I will bet my life that he will never make the Allstar team, the guy is a 3.5 mill player at best, He must have family working with the angels, less than 5 percent of MLB players make at least 10 mill a year, if you think he is in the 5 percent then you have some good weed.

He didn't sign with the rangers, and he already made an all-star team.:ohno:

I thought it said he resigned with the rangers, He will not make the allstar team again, I can already see it, he played in the best hitters park in the majors, but he will hit 280 with 15 homers and 70 rbi and play good defense, that would be worth about 5 mill at best, I have zero respect for the angels front office now, if he is worth 10 mill then pujols should get 35 mill.

the baseball owners are the biggest bunch of morons. they continually overpay and whine about not making any money. can't blame matthews for taking it, but between his deal and frank thomas' its unbelieveable

Nothing like giving monster contracts to players 30+ coming off a breakout/career year. List at two now: Matthews and Mark DeRosa. Both from Texas also.
