we are here in lovely tampa for the holiday weekend visiting my mother. we are staying (at mom's suggestion) at the clarion hotel on fowler by the university. the hotel itself is fine...clean room, very nice pool and restaurant/bar.

but, i went directly across the street (to the "kash & kerry") this morning to get some milk and other stuff for the room and there were armed security guards in the grocery store. i have to say, i've never seen that before...even on "cops". also, i cant be sure but i think i saw ludacris and 50-cent walking down the street towards i-275 this evening.

fisher, should i check-out tomorrow and take the family elsewhere?

Blue, I think you meant to go to Sanibel, St. Pete, Naples or Marco Island - yes, Tampa has a lot of hood.

headed to marco on sunday for 5 days...if i make it. my mom has lived in north tampa for 12 years...her nieghborhood is very nice. she lives on a golf course...everyone has a pool...people are friendly...they are out washing their cars and walking their dogs, etc. but, the nearest hotels are 20 minutes away. she said this one was nice and it is but...the surroundings are...well...bad.

Oh yea, your not in a real good area............I would get out.

Although your not really terribly unsafe there, it is rather bad with drug dealers and crack whores running rampant.

NEBRASKA Avenue is very bad for a good long stretch............however, TAMPA GREYHOUND is only a couple miles from you, which you should check out for the 1230 matinee races.............its a REAL FINE, FINE track(just don't bring the kids). A must see TAMPA landmark is Tampa Greyhound.................please go and report your experience there.

Are you going to BUSCH GARDENS.......highly recommend that for the kids.

But again, PLEASE, at least make a token appearance at the dogtrack.

That University averages about 3.3 murders and 34.5 rapes per year.

Yes, your just fine, your mom is right.

Stay focused at all times and don't let your guard down.........and PLEASE be aware of your surroundings at all times sir.

Armed security guards? What's the big deal? Happens all the time in many third world countries. All a matter of what you're used to I guess.

BLUE, the reason the store had armed guards was that on Fridays they cash a lot of payroll checks and with the closure on Thanksgiving they likely had a giant flow of business and incoming dough as well.

Welcome to the area again...Have a great stay

FYI, I have no less than three armed guards protecting the complex that I live in.

......and if the bad guys make it through that barrier, they will have to deal with my "weapons of mass destruction".
