In which sport would you say the head coach/manager has most effect on outcome?

I personally say football.

The decision to attempt FG vs. go for it. 2point conversion option. Pulling QB. Offensive/defensive schemes.

Baseball is pretty detailed as well.

I would say in my opinion professional basketball coaches have least impact on outcome. Players seem to play like they are on the asphalt courts still.

What do you guys think?

football for sure, but basketball is far ahead of baseball in terms of x and o's affect on the game. No question about that.

Just like Phil Jackson when he had Michael.

Hockey.
Line changes etc. etc.
Faster game, more adjustments, only the greatest teams had the greatest head coaches.
Al Arbor, Scotty Bowman etc. etc.
No NHL team ever won with a shitty head coach.
Think about it.

A great football coach can turn losers into winners. Behind every successfull team is a good head coach. Even Miami Hurricanes.

I would have said baseball, but after considering the idiot Larussa has even won twice, I guess you can discount that.

I'd say baseball and hockey. Tie score, top 9 bases loaded and two out, you bring in a gas can like Burgos even though the previous reliever got the two outs on 4 pitches. Yeah, call it another loss.

bill, I'd have to put Scotty Bowman at the top of all coaches irrespective of sport. He had winners in StL, Mon, Buf, Pit and Det yet he never gets mentioned at all when the discussion gets around to "Greatest Coach." What is important is that he did it over 4 different decades and that demonstrates he was able to adjust to the changes in the game. He is the only coach in the big 4 (NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB) to win championships with 3 different teams.

Bowman took expansion StL to the cup finals in the 60s, destroyed the competition with the Habs in the 70s, won cups with Pit and Det in the 90s. He was Pitt's director of player personnel in 1990 and guess what - they won the cup under Badger Bob and Bowman.

I doubt anyone knows more about hockey and hockey strategy that Bowman.

nba. nfl coaches are mainly figureheads, they are nothing without quality assistants. all they do is make easy decisions like go for it on 4th, go for 2 etc. NBA coaches have to deal with everything,
