Considering opening a 1k betting account for a cousin as a Christmas gift...naughty or nice?

21 year old kid. Thinking about doing this for him, but allowing him to place minimum bets only ($10) as a way to teach gambling discipline. Any other bet higher than that will call for the account to be suspended immediately. Is this a good way to teach a young kid, gambling discipline?

Kid has been bugging me to place bets for him and or hooking him up with a bookie every time I see him. Have been telling him yeah I'll think about it hoping he would forget or move on, but he won't let it go and wants in.

Figured this would be easier and the best thing as I would monitor his action to ensure he is not betting the board daily or betting more than to win $10 on any bet.

Not sure I sould even be considering doing this...THOUGHTS?:ohno:

IMO, Naughty. I wouldnt encourage anyone to gamble, and being involved in the industry, I dont even like suggesting plays for friends when/if they ask.

Your idea might sound good in theory, thinking that you are setting him off on the right path, but nearly all gamblers started playing small, and with discipline, and there arent too many success stories.

Youre not going to be able to monitor the kids plays forever, and all you are doing is facilitating his urge to gamble. What happens when he is 25 and earning ( and losing ) good money? What happens if he finds a local and starts betting on credit? The worst thing that can happen with this kid is that he starts off winning and thinks that he is a genius. He is only going to look at ways to increase his action because he thinks he is that damn good.

When I worked in the financial markets we used to try and start rookies off with a losing trade because if their first trade was a winner they could end up thinking it was all too easy, and thats when the trouble began.

I would never do what youre considering doing for anyone, especially a kid who is only beginning his money earning cycle. I would be discouraging any bite of the gambling bug, not encouraging it.

The Xmas gift that you give him this year could have him pawning off Xmas gifts for years to come.

I think it is a really bad idea to give someone money to gamble as a way of teaching them dicipline. It may as well be monopoly money to them, much better people gamble with their own money as they might realise that it is hard earned cash they are risking.

Tell him to save his money and spend it on condoms and six packs.

IMO, live and learn is the only way. Got to take your bumps early and learn from your mistakes. However, I guess if your taught from the get go to have good money management, maybe you will be different.

Take him to a gamblers' anonymous meeting and a bankruptcy court. Also, allow him to speak with a counselor who specializes in gambling.

Then ask him, is it really worth it?

yeah Mr J is right on.

do this, give him the $1,000 and in 6 months he's gotta pay u back the $1000 plus another $250.

if he's late or short, break his legs.

that should teach him a lesson.

IF MY SONS COUSIN OPENED A GAMBLING ACCOUNT FOR HIM, I WOULD FUCKING KILL HIM. WHEN THE KID EVENTUALLY FINDS A WAY TO OPEN HIS OWN ACCOUNT, ONE THAT YOU CANT MONITOR, AND FLIES RIGHT DOWN THE SHITTER, GUESS WHO IS GETTING BLAMED. DONT DO IT

Better to have him learn and lose his money in small amounts NOW, rather than pay for it BIG TIME down the road...such as ruining a marriage, losing a house, etc......

Take the 1000 and tell the kid to have all his friends call and hold their bets....much easier way to make money....and watch for sharps playing line moves...give them the boot!

i am 35 and been gambling for almost all my life. starting out with my dad taking me to the dog and horse tracks. and playing late night poker games in highschool. betting with bookies in college. people who grow up in this atmosphere is basiclly stuck in this world. why would you want this kind of life for anyone? recently, ive been fortunate the last five years but it was a tuff road. ive had many friends ask me to teach them how to gamble, but i refuse them because i dont want this kind of life for them. i have had friends that lost everything. would you want to responsible for your cousin? honestly, he is going to be 21, give him the 1000 bucks and let him open his own account. dont do it for him.

Very Bad Idea...I would not reccomend this to anybody in particular a 21 year old unless they are Sir Charles Barkley rich and can afford to lose thousands of $$.
I have been betting games for 15 years and I enjoy it but I would not reccomend it to any of my friends because lots of people can not handle it.
If this Kid wins a lot of $$ he will never quit,he will probably become a lifer!
