NFL Overtime rules are just plain wrong.

Play all day long , don't get the ball in OT because of a coin flip and you lose in OT because you never even had the ball.

:ohno: Sure wish the Texans would have called heads!

Sure wish the Texans were not a joke of the NFL. How do you let a running rookie QB who is dieing to run on third and long run right up the middle for a 40 YD TD run? This team has no clue at all. Disgraceful.

What they should do is bring back ties and do away with OT all together (except in playoff games where you play for a full 15 minute period) but do away with the 1 point extra point conversion and make all extra points worth 2 points with a one play from scrimmage shot by run or pass from say around the 3.5 yard line worth two points.

I like the NFL overtime better than NCAAF. Never fails, at least once a season I get burned with an UNDER play in college as a game goes to several overtimes. Just a personal preference but if I had to pick I like the NFL OT's much better.

Of course it didn't hurt I needed the Titans today, LOL.

always thought it should be the 1st to 6 points

at least a FG doesnt win it alone

need either 2 possessions or TD to win

and if you give up a TD ala Texans style you dont deserve a chance to get back on the field

they should just use the college rule, it is unfair to not get the ball, but then again, the texans defense couldn't make a play.

i've been on the losing side of an OT game where you don't get a chance to score and it sucks

That's a great idea....of course, being so, it doesn't have a chance of happening!

this is a hot subject, but I disagree that the NFL rules are unfair. Just because a team wins the coin flip and gets the ball, doesn't mean they will win the game. As a matter of fact, I believe it's right at 50% give or take a percent where the team that doesn't get the ball first wins. The team that gets the ball first has more pressure. They turn the ball over, especially deep in their own territory and they are basically Toast.

Vince Young continues to make plays with his feet and did it again today.

The data appear to support the notion that the football team scoring first in sudden-death overtime is usually the one that had won the coin toss and received the ball.

Interestingly, the cumulative data hide the effect of a rule change that occurred in 1994, when kickoffs were moved back 5 yards to the 30-yard line. Since 1994, nearly one-third of overtime games have been won on the first possession by the team that received the ball first. In the first 20 seasons, under the old rule, slightly more than one-quarter of the games were won in this fashion.

A recent analysis by economist Richard E. Hawkins of Pennsylvania State University in DuBois confirms that these differences are statistically significant.

"The analysis finds with 99.99 % certainty that the [coin] flip has made a difference in the outcome of the game over the last 10 years," he concludes. "But for the period prior to those 10 years, the coin flip cannot be shown to be important."
There's some discussion of the proposed "first to six" change in there as well.

I agree I have heard that discuss before on talk shows would be a good ideal for the NFL to adopt.

College OT has flaws to if the team that gets the ball first turns it over the team getting the ball next can be real conservative because they know all they need is a FG.

Also on instant replays the NFL should adopt the NHL rule where all disputes are reviewed by the same group of people in one location and relay their decision to the ref.

Detriot was screwed by the ref in a call early in their game today.

All NHL replays are reviewed by people in Toronto to rule on.

I think OT should allow each team to have at least 1 possession. So, if a team scores on the 1st possession of OT, the other team should be given a possession to match/beat the other team's score. After that, it's fair game.

I realize it's 51% to be exact...I just find it ridiculously anticlimatic for a team who just tied the game up to not even get a chance...I think its worse than having a tie, I would rather see a tie over this rule...I doubt they ever change it though.

Sorry J-man I think the sudden death aspect of OT makes it so exciting. It's a lot like NHL playoff hockey - you can win the opening faceoff of OT, skate into the opposing zone and score the winner. Why should the other team be allowed to get the puck back one more time? If their defence/goalie had stopped the puck, they would have the chance to go the other way. The same applies to football. If Houston's defence had shut down Vince Young then they may have had a chance to win the game. But their defence failed so Tenn deserves the win.
