OT- wireless routers (logging into sportsbook problems)

On tuesday, Mansion made some upgrades to their software, and since then, I can no longer log into Mansion if I have my router connected. I get an error that says 'technical error' please try again.

After disabling my windows firewall and my Mcafee firewall I still had the same error.

Then we tried hooking up the computer directly to the cable modem, and bingo!!!! it works. Obviously my cheap microsoft router was somehow buggering things up.

The other thing I noticed, with my PC hooked up directly to the modem, is that my internet is WAY WAY faster, like 3 times faster at least.....

The problem is I NEED a router as I use a laptop, and I also use VONAGE home phone service. So I have the following questions:

1) Is there anyway to resolve my MANSION log in problem with the router connected? do you know why I cant log in through the router anymore after their software update on tuesday?

2) do routers always slow down the internet that much or is it because I have a shitty cheap one?

3) which router would you recommend to keep up top speeds?

Routers usually slow things down. That's what you give up for added protection. My speeds go up 30% when not connected through my router.

Do you know how to change the settings on your router?

no.... I found my manual, and then it tells me to type in an address to get to the settings page.

when I get there it wants a user name and password that I do not have, and when I try the generic one, it doesnt work.

This is another problem I have since my network is not secure!!! Im not too worried about it as I dont have many neighbours since I live on a golf course, however, it could be adding to the problem.

So you dont think I would be better off with a different router? it will still slow it down alot?

that sucks.

No, I am using a microsoft router, it was a real cheapie I got for next to nothing.

I cant beleive how fast my internet is without this router.... Its got to be at least twice or three times faster than it was before.......

If it wasnt for VONAGE, i would probably disconnect it and only use it when I need wireless in the house, but with VONAGE its a big problem

You should get Vonage to hook you up with the Linksys WRTP54G router. They were basically giving them away about a year ago, and work with virtually no issues.

Routers should *NOT* significantly slow your speed down. They are *NOT* just for "security". Get a better router. It is possible that your network is way faster than your wireless (doubtful) which would slow you down, but sounds like you just got a shit router.

If you get a good router and hook it up right it shouldn't slow anything down. Get a Linksys!

It all depends on the settings. I have a Linksys and it does slow it down somewhat, but then, I haven't had a virus on my computer in 3 years.

Plug cable from wall into a Switch Box, connect wireless router & computer (nic card/USB) to switch box.

Or

Buy a better wireless router

not sure I understand, right now the cable goes directly into a modem, if it goes into a switchbox, does it go from switchbox to modem?

never heard of switchboxes?

s-boxes are sometime called routers but they are just 10/100 network 'pass through' boxes. D-Link has a couple. Just do not get one with a built-in firewall. S-boxes will assign local addys.

Your wireless router will plug into the s-box as well as your 'puter

btw-- I use a 2wire wireless router and I find no reduction in speed. I connect to the 2wire router wirelessly with a laptop and a bedroom computer and also directly with a 10/100 cable to my main desktop. All 3 DL at top speed.

The 2Wire router does it auto if you 1st follow the directions.

On set up (or after reset) run 2Wire setup cd disc connected with 10/100 cable from router to computer and input name/password. After that the wireless connections are assigned automatically by the router.

Of couse you must know the WPA encryption provided.

That's nice and all, but there is nothing in a Linksys router that is preventing you from getting a virus. Nothing.

Routers have built in firewalls, but this should not cause a problem with login. Try taking the Vonage out of the loop, just use the cable modem and router, and see if that helps. It could be the Vonage setup. If removing the Vonage does not help, try another brand of router. Netgear, Linksys.

About the speed problem, Vonage can really sap your bandwidth. My relative's download speed is 3mbit/s without Vonage, 1.5mbit/s with Vonage. So they are running at half speed with Vonage hooked up. It is worth it to them because it saves them about $40 per month off the phone bill.
