Read a great book last year that outlined the inside story of the history of pro football....might even be called, "The History of Pro Football".....but it was a 400 or so page book that looked behind the scenes of the NFL, particularly in the fifties and sixties. Excellent read. There is a great story of a meeting in the car rental area of the Dallas airport that essentially started the AFL.
The influence of Lamar Hunt on the NFL can not be overstated. He is one of the few men (Mara, Modell, and Rooney are others) that are responsible for what we see as the modern NFL. Hunt is really the only successful leader of a major expansion effort--many others (USFL, XFL) failed. Few people know who he is, but the NFL has recognized him my naming the AFC conference championship trophy after him.
Those of us who enjoy, love, (and profit) from the NFL should all realize that the game lost a giant of a man.
RIP Lamar Hunt.
