Just looking at some ESPN highlights of NBA games that in alot of venues that there are tons of empty seats even near the floor level. Just wondering if the NBA's marketing plan is starting to catch up with them and people are staying home rather than attending games.

I know that tonights game here in Indy that they are offering tickets for the 1977 price of $8. I personally think the David Stern era in the NBA needs to end and maybe most of the fans now do too.

I have also noticed several games recently that looked dreary as far as attendance. The other night in Miami was a good example.
I wonder if teams somehow recieve more revenue from outside sources (tv, merchandisig) rather than depending on ticket money?

Its a common misconception among fans that attendance figures are dropping when they almost always go up year after year.

Royalfan I am not saying that the league is in no way in trouble, just that I don't believe it is as popular as say 5-10 years ago. Seems to me that some people who were avid fans of this league are now staying away. Superstars of this league are not as enjoyable to watch, at least for me, as say Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were in the 1980's...too many off court problems now. Atheletes today come off to me as spoiled and will only give effort when they want to or have some incentive. Just my opinion.

NBA is arguably the 2nd biggest sport. The finals beat the world series last year in the ratings department.

If you're the NBA, what do you care if people show up for middle of the season games?

I went to the Suns game tonight. My section had maybe 70% of the seats filled. However if the Suns were inflating the numbers, why did they say sold out over a week ago and not sell tickets at the door? People bought the seats, they just didn't get used. I could never understand why you would do that, but I suppose shit happens sometimes. I need to get so freakin rich or important that I buy tickets to events and then just blow them off.

Hard to compare one race with a series. If baseball or hoops were a one-game showdown for the title there would be more people watching than Daytona. Daytona, SB, NCAA championships, etc. are all marketed as one-event shows. Baseball and basketball can't do that. Still add up all the people who watch over the course of the series and that is a hell of a lot of viewers.
