When it comes to steroids? Is it just me or has the media almost swept this issue under the rug. Baseball players such as Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and Sammy Sosa were basically crucified for the same offense, but this guy has taken almost zero heat for juicing. I don't get it.

Baseball is a #'s game...the are revered, practically worshipped, and when someone does something that puts the #'s into question and the integrity of the game, it's a big deal.

In football, meanwhile, a lot of players probably take steroids. And the sport has more of a team-oriented feel to it than baseball does.

Just my opinion.

I think both of you are right, baseball is definitely about historical numbers. I just thought when this story first broke it would be huge news, considering how great a player Merriman is, but no one really talks about it.

ya bases r about history and numbers if merriam was a running back and goin for 2500 yards rushing this year then maybe bigger deal but a defensive player just wont garner same attention for same violation

People dont even know what swept under the rug really means, maybe 5% of positive tests are even reported.

If that's true about only 5% being reported, why wouldn't they protect a superstar like Merriman?

I guess once Merriman starts getting close to the sacks or tackles record we will care? That's quite unfair...

I can only think of two reasons why they perhaps made an example of Merriman, a oposed to letting most of the other positive tests slide by.

Firstly, perhaps because he had such a great rookie season, the NFL pulled him down a peg by telling him that he cant just walk into the league fully roided up and expect a free ride.

Secondly, he might have been a walking pharmacy with the number of substances in his system and the NFL thought it was beyond a joke that he should get away with it.

I dont know why he got made a scapegoat, and more importantly I dont know why its been swept aside like it has done, especially after he came out definantly saying he would fight all charges and try and clear his name, and then a few days later turned around and said that he would accept it like a man. Youre either innocent and you want to clear your name/rep, or your guilty and you do the time, you cant have it both ways.

His test was a false positive - he ate a rib eye and had some bourbon the night before - everyone knows this crazy combo throws the test off.

And because now off the steroids, he is still dominating. So his story that he tested positive for nandrolone as a result of a supplement is more buyable.
