How can you block a kick, and then have the ball end up in the opposingi team's hands, with 1st and 10. How can that even be possible?

Leon Lett rule...how coaches don't teach their players these situational rules is beyond me.

Know the game, players!

Remember the Thanksgiving day game with the Cowboys Leon lett.

The phrase was coined,if a punt is blocked

just "Lett" it go.

The situation is just as if the punt was not blocked: had a member of the receiving team touched the ball (once it crossed the line of scrimmage), the kicking team could recover. Think fumbled return or one of those punts that hits off of someone's leg when everyone is trying to get away.

If the ball does NOT cross the line of scrimmage, the kicking team can pick it up and advance without the receiving team having to touch it, but that's a different rule.

If it's blocked, it should be treated as a blocked punt. Not a punt. Re-fucking-diculous.

Very bad rule. Terrible. So basically if a guy blocks the kick, it flips up into their air and hits the blocker lying on the ground then it's a live ball and the kicking team can recover it anywhere and retain possession. Dumb.

this rule had NOTHING to do with Leon Lett or the Leon "LETT" rule. Leon Lett that thanksgiving game vs. the Dolphins touched a blocked FIELD GOAL. Two completely different rules and two completely different situations.

This one is much different because it deals with line of srimmage. It's STILL a whacky rule and should be changed. A blocked field goal is different...that can be blocked and as long as the blocking team doesn't touch the ball, it can NOT be advanced by the kicking team. A blocked punt CAN be advanced. It is a dumb rule but the chiefs had that ball and blew it..their bad.

There is no difference between tipping a punt that goes 50 yards or blocking 1 that goes 1 yard over the line of scrimage. Both are live balls once they pass the line.

I don't agree that it's a dumb rule and I don't believe it should be changed. If anything, it ensures that all punts are treated the same. What if the defending team partially blocks the punt or it grazes a defender's hand? You may not know that if you're on the receiving team and there can't be two sets of rules.

Anyone who has played football is aware of the rule and it's the same as fielding a "regular" punt. If you can field it confidently with a chance to advance, then do it. Otherwise, get away.

I had it right sitting here on the couch--I knew that the umpire made the wrong signal. I was surprised that Al didn't get it right away.

BLITZ the point was players DO NOT KNOW THE RULES...and that is just unacceptable in my opinion.

Journey, I'm probably pissed because I've got the Chiefs and they're playing like complete shit. Still, if they can go down on a nice drive and get a TD they'll be back in the game. My point on the play though (the the Chiefs screwed up) is that a field goal, no matter where it lands, once blocked as long as the blocking team isn't stupid enough to touch it...the kicking team is screwed, b/c the play is dead.

On a punt..completely different story. That game in Dallas with the Fins was not only stupid by Lett because he didn't know the rules...just like you said..but because it was also snowing and his big ass wasn't gonna do anything with the ball on an ICE FIELD anyway....wasn't his only brain dead play..don bee bee in the superbowl...lol.

J,
In their defense 1/2 of these rules are so fvking retarded to the point where they defy logic. NFL need to cut the BS with the lawyer-esque rule book.
