Got this off the Charger's boards...loved this...

So, Merriman will be named to the Pro Bowl team for defensive feats done while using the same illegal substances that got him the four-game suspension. Also, unless the NFL hands down a special edict and the NFL Players Association acquiesces (ho-ho-ho!), Merriman will be eligible to be selected Defensive Player of the Year for those same feats.

Isn't that akin to Jack Abramoff being named Lobbyist of the Year?

You know what I find amusing about the entire NFL Steroid debate....Back when the story was breaking about steroids in Baseball...everyone was saying "The NFL has a steroid testing policy".....now its...."baseball is about historic records....the NFL is about speed and hitting"...so that makes it ok for NFL players.

It's either cheating, or not cheating, doesn't matter what sport. Either allow it, or give lifetime bans in every sport to those found guilty.

'roid usage is more tolerated in football than in any other sport by us North American fans..........I honestly don't know why but it's true.

If he was cheating (and I lean towards believing he was), he certainly isn't now, and he is still dominating.

Great post. The people who want to hang Barry Bonds on the corss who his sins should also be the first people to throw stones at Merriman for really doing the exact same thing. While baseball players like Bonds get put under a mircoscope the media have basically given Merriman a free press for his cheating. Just a double standard that sucks.

What Bonds did was far worse. The HR title is practically the Holy Grail of baseball stats, held by the Babe for decades, only grudgingly given to Maris (with an asterisk). McGuire, Sosa, and Bonds all cheated to surpass the mark, and in a sport where numbers are more important than any other, their crimes are unforgivable.

You're right - they both cheated to get an edge. But no one really cares if a dopey LB from San Diego does it. As for Bonds et al, you don't go cheating the Babe.

Bonds never got caught. And oh yeah. Baseball didn't have a steroid policy so how could he cheat???

At some point we will all just see how crazy these policies are. While it sounds like quitting to say to allow them, these chemists are just too strong for testing and policies anyways. Just legalize them and get on with it. They are nothing more than tools. You can't get massive and strong just from popping some pills. No we don't want our kids necessarily taking them, but I happen to think getting it out in the open and stating the truth about them will do a lot more good. After all its all about performance and hard work in sports, these things only aid that. There isn't a pill in the world which can make you have amazing hand-eye coordination like Barry has. When are people ever going to come to grips with this? His records aren't about added power or bulk, they are more about smaller ballparks and feeble pitching.

may as well just legalize it.

Exactly Jman...either allow everyone, or ban them all for life. 4 game suspension and still make the pro-bowl? I'm a huge Charger fan but what a freakin joke.

Merrimen was taking some sort of protein mix that had a banned substance in it. It wasn't like he was shooting up steroids.

Hook, line, sinker. C'mon, you are smarter than that. The NFL made an example of one of their best defensive players because of a protein drink? That was his excuse.....a lame one at best.

And Barry's (who BTW has never tested positive) head has doubled in size from eating spinach.
