OVERRATED

1) kerry wood. the list of overrated players starts and ends here. this guy has a reputation that is nowhere near his talent level...and it never was. most would probably agree with me know but, if i had posted this 3 or 4 years ago, people would be calling me all sorts of things.

he was living on two games...the one in 1998 when he struck out 21 houston astros and the 2003 playoff game against atlanta where he pitched a one-hitter. i made so much money betting against him over the years its just silly. i mean, how is a .500 pitcher on a team with no bullpen always a -220 favorite? i'm just sad he kept getting hurt because he was easy money.

2) cal ripken. this guy played in a million games in a row and didnt make errors. he also had 2 or 3 great offensive seasons. other than that...above average is what i'd call him. all anyone talks about is the streak. the streak, the streak. give me a break. cal was good...but he is not among the best shortstops of all time. not even close.

3) scottie pippen. anyone who closely followed the bullies in the 1990's knows what i am talking about. michael jordan put this guy on his back...as soon as jordan retired (the first time) we all saw what scottie pippen was about. he never did anything without michael...except take himself out of a playoff game with seconds to go because he didnt get the ball.

4) brett favre. i am a brett favre fan but...the way people talk about this guy, you'd think he was joe montana. he is not joe montana...he is not john elway...he is not even tom brady. brett won one superbowl and put together a string of very good...even great seasons in the mid 90's. but, he has also had some very bad seasons. the last five years, i have seen him make bad decision after bad decision and bad throw after bad throw.

even in his prime, i can think of at least 5 qbs that i would rather have as my qb with the game on the line in the 4th qtr.

5) eddie murray. this guy is so overrated, i cant even begin.

UNDERRATED

1) hank aaron. it seems weird putting the all time home run king on this list but, when people talk about the best outfielders of all time, he is almost always listed at #5 or 6 behind mays, mantle, clemente, dimaggio.

the guy hit 755 homeruns. and, i think he is also the all time rbi leader. he did all this without steriods and dealing with racism and death threats. also, when he first broke into the majors, he stole 50 bases a year! if you look at his numbers...they're so awesome and consistent from year-to-year, its unbelievable. only babe ruth's numbers are better, imo.

2) paul molitor. no one talks about this guy and he was awesome. look at his numbers...and he played a good part of his carreer at second base, which used to be a position where the guy would hit .235 with 12 hr. plus, molly was a great embassador for the game. very overlooked carreer.

3) rickey henderson. if you look at his numbers, they are staggering. he was, without a doubt, the best lead-off hitter to ever play the game. he holds the record for carreer runs scored, stolen bases and walks (i believe). he also had a lot of power. he had a weak throwing arm but, that is the only thing bad you can say about his ability. his personality rubbed people the wrong way but...rickey be rickey.

he might be the most underrated player of all time in any sport.

4) walter payton. his records are now gone. emmitt smith and corey dillon hold the records for most carreer rushing yards and most yards rushing in a game. that is a shame because walter was the best football player i have ever seen. rushing, catching the ball out of the backfield, blocking and just plain dishing it out. he was not the biggest guy or the fastest guy at his position but, he was the best in the game during his era, without question. and, he is never mentioned as the best running back of all time. most people think jim brown was the best. hell, lots of people in chicago think gale sayers was better than walter.

i dont know...i never saw sayers or brown play but, for me its walter. he was the best.

Ripken's hitting stats may have been average, but from what i've heard he's the reason players like A-Rod and more athletic, taller, more powerful players have been playing SS. Kinda created a different mold of shorstop.

Plus, being good enough (for the most part) to start that many games, and actually playing that many games in a row is unbelievable. I don't think people actaully appreciate how amazingly difficult it is to not take a game off for that long.

Blue,

I must disagree with you on Scottie P. I think he complemented Jordan and made him a better player. As MJ made scotty better...I think I would have left off your list all together.

brett favre's streak is way more impressive than ripken's. favre plays a position where guys that weigh 100 lbs more than him are trying to kill him almost every play.

i am so sick of hearing about the streak...he played baseball. they should never miss a game...not any of them.

depends on who is doing the rating. If Rickey is then it would be impossible for him to be underrated.

g, do you remember what happen when jordan retired in 1993? do you remember how pippen played and how the bulls played? please, once jordan was gone, the other teams could focus on scotty and he could not deliver. all he did was pout and blame tony kukoc.

top 50 players of all time? no freakin' way!

Yep, unreal and inexplicable that Pippen gets a bad rap. He is Top 50 all time and a great player. No brainer.

Pippen --

With all due respect Blue I think that you are out of your mind. This guy is a sure fire hall of famer and was named one of the 50 best players in NBA history.

The first season that Jordan retired 1993-94 he averaged 22/9/6.

The Bulls were a bad call away from returning to the Finals without Jordan.

He scored almost 19,000 points in his NBA career and was one of the best defenders that I have ever seen.

Off the court he may be the biggest prick that I have ever met. I know Scottie personally and he is a A-Hole but you can't doubt his numbers.

And remember Michael didn't win crap until Scottie came along.

The NBA almost always is a two star league.

100% agree on Kerry Wood. He has been the most profiable go against possibly over the past 10 years. I was at the game vs Atlanta in 2003 and was at his 20K game and he was filthy but that has been it. I wish the Cubs would part ways already.

Walter -- what else can you say. In my opinion the best Running Back I ever saw -- but in fairness I never saw Jim Brown so I will say best RB of my lifetime (I'm 35).

Let's not start this thread again...

What did Pippen do without Jordan in '93? He had his best year statistically of his career.

Of course the Bulls were worse...they didn't replace Jordan with anyone. Take anyone's best player away and they will fail. You have to fill that hole with something. That team had no talent the following year. Kukoc was overhyped and never turned into the player management hyped him to be.

Kerry Wood = Mark Prior = Kerry Wood = Mark Prior. They're interchangeable. Just ask the CAT scanner technician.

Overrated:

Nolyn Ryan: Guy was like a 500 pitcher most of his career and not a winner. He just had that great fastball and K's influence people. Roger Clemens he is NOT. He was wild for a long time in his career and actually got better at the end. Way overrated for my money.

Underrated:

Carl Lewis: Track is not big here in the US but this guy is one of the greatest in history and deserves his status. 100, 200 Long Jump and relays he was the man and the best for a long time and rose to the occasion at the big events like the Olympics. Lewis is one of the all time greats.

If you are ever going to rip on Scottie rip on him for the migrane game. I suffer from them as well and could not imagine playing basketball if I had one.

I can think of many more players I would call overrated before SP.
