Just a few questions for anyone with knowledge on buying a new car. I am looking to buy a new car in the month of January. I really would like to buy a 07' Accura TL. I was looking at either the Type S model or just the regular TL. I noticed that the regular TL is 33,000 and change and the Type S model is 38,000 and change (Type S has more power/sport package and a navi system). I know Accura's are a popular car but i am not sure how much dickering can be done with these cars on the final price. I am not trading in a car with this purchase and will finance about 30K (going to put down 8K). I have perfect credit and no bills so getting the financing should not be a problem (also paid off my last car note with no problems). I live in upstate NY and there is only one accura dealership within a good amount of distance of where I live. This is one of the reason they may not be so willing to dicker on the price. I am open to buying another car outside of accura but really like the accura. Any suggestions on negotiating a price on the car? I know I need to look up the invoice of the car to see what the deal may pay for it and go from there. This will be the first car where I am doing all the leg work on my own. Thanks for everyones help in advance!!

You might want to get the new car but I would recommend buying an older model maybe 1 or 2 years old. As soon as you drive the car out of the lot it has depreciated a considerable amount. Sometimes people buy a car, put less than 10,000m on it and then sell it for some unknown reason (in debt, divorce, etc...). Go let someone else pay for that depreciation cost and pick it up off of them. For negociating a deal I am not sure if I am the best but I would go for at least 1k off the price. I don't like dealing with these salesmen because they are good (most of the time) and can tell when you want to buy the car, if they pick that up then they will tell you why they can't cut you a deal but what you do is leave. I would just advise to take your time on this decision and not rush into it. I don't know how much time you have already waited or researched but my 2 cents.

Go to :

http://www.carsdirect.com

Find out the dealer invoice on the model you want. You then at least know how much leeway youve got.Depending on the availibility of the model from the mfgtr, haggling may or may not work.Often cars that are hard to hold on the lot will garner sticker w/o exception.Knowing the cost of the vehicle is a good place to start.Another tip: Much better to buy new at the end of a model year.

Go to Edmonds.com. From what I have read there you are getting a good price on a very good car.
Also, everything bakin said about a 1 or 2 year old car is good advice.

thanks for the help thus far` guys...i am going to look to see what 06' TL's are still on the lot for a possible good deal. I know the Type S is only avaialble in the 07' models. I need to get a new car in the next month. By the end of January is my goal. I would have no problem with a new 06' or dealer driven 06' if the price is right. I am flexable in that area.

Depends on the popularity of the vehichle. Something like a Lincoln Town car probably drops a ton in value quick, things like Toyotas and Hondas hold the value. Acura is deluxe Honda, right ? I think the used price with 15k miles will be only maybe 2k off of new.

The dealers put more guarantee on slightly used cars, than brand new.

I hate buying new cars, but it's one of those things you just have to do every few years. As some one mentioned go toe edmunds.com, also kelly blue book (kbb.com) is helpful. Do your research and bring the papers in with you and the salesman usually will go with what you ask. Just beware of the business manager. I agreed to buy the guy and warranty for invoice price. I was feeling very proud of myself until the f*cking business manager started throwing all these side deals my way - rust protection, security plans, prepaid labor cost . . . My head was spinning by the time I got out of there. I felt like I owed them one for giving such a fair price on the car, but that was ridiculous. Don't let them try to pile on extras.

After you figure out the price you want to pay, try negotiating with your local dealer. If you can't get anywhere doing that, consider travelling a few hundred miles to purchase the car from a more competitive dealer. You can possibly even do some or all of the negotiating by phone or email. You can have your new car serviced at the local place even if you don't buy from them.

C-Note

I own a 2004 Acura TL that I bought new from the dealership. I was in no rush to get a new car so I was able to negotiate and wait it out playing hardball. From my experience Acura will not budge much on the price. I was shocked how firm they remained on their lowest offer. Even after a month of dealing with multiple dealerships they wouldn't come down any more. It didn't help that it was a very popular car that year, but I learned from others as well that Honda and Acura don't go very low off the sticker like the American car companies do.

Also buying a model a year or two old won't save you much as Acura doesn't depreciate much like the American cars do.

Good luck, I personally wouldn't go to far out of the way for a deal because it may be hard to find on the TL.

This model is not the kind they are going to be cutting any bargains with...they can get what they asking it just may take awhile....

But you do have 1 thing in your favor..your excellant credit. when your ready to get serious with the guy let him run your credit 1st thing, once they see you can buy right then with no problem you've got the advantage then.......they know they wont be sitting around bullshitting and they'll be kissing your ass instead.

Seems like one of the best cars for holding value.

2006 Acura TL
+ click to enlarge | view slideshow > </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Acura cars get a value boost due to parentage. Honda sells Acura as its premium brand. Therefore some of Honda's sturdy reputation for making long-life vehicles rubs off on models like TL, a four-door, five-passenger mid-size car that Acura promotes as a luxury sport sedan. What's more, like all vehicles it sells, Honda does not push the Acura TL into fleets, which would dilute its resale appeal.

Beyond those factors, Acura boosts TL's appeal by loading it with popular features. You can choose a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic. You can add a navigation system and road-gripping summer tires. Otherwise, every TL comes equipped just about the way you would want it. Features include four-wheel disc brakes with electronically distributed anti-lock, dressy 17-inch alloy wheels, a full contingent of airbags, tire pressure monitoring, high-intensity headlights, leather upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, premium eight-speaker multi-functioning audio, power moon roof and more. By simplifying TL's option count, Acura assures shoppers that they'll find pre-owned versions that are generously outfitted.

i want to thank you guys for all of your help with the car information. I went to the local acura dealership with no intention of buying. I did purchase the 07 TL type-s. I feel i received a fair price and the dealership had the color I wanted instock. They said the price they gave me was only good that day. Here is a breakdown:
- Sticker was 38,800 (includes 650 destination charge)
- Saleswoman says the best they can do is 38,000 since the type s is a new model in 2007 and they have very little inventory
- I offered 36,000 (invoice is 35,444)
- Saleswoman says sales manager will take 36,800
- I tell sales woman she sells the car right now for 36,500. Sales manager says OK.
This is about 2,300 off the sticker. I was told the price was very fair by some acura owners I know since acura does not negotiate much on pricing and it is a brand new model. Thanks again for the advice. Much appreciated!!

exactly right you pay WAYYYYY to much for the car not matter what deal they tell you you got ...so buy a new car 1-2 years old .. you have already lost 1000'0 when you drive it off the lot

The important thing is that you feel you received a fair price and are happy with the purchase. If you are like me, the extra effort to save another 500-600 bucks may not have been worth it.

However.....you overpaid. I've got a friend who is a sales mgr. at an American dealership who tells me they routinely let stuff go for 100-200 over invoice. (Even his top selling models). He also says don't believe the hype/reputation that surround certain other manufacturers/models. Nobody should ever pay more than 500 over invoice for ANY model by ANY manufacturer as long as the car is under 40K.

Also, buy your new cars late at night (an hour or so before closing time)toward the end of the month. I guarantee they would've let that thing go for 35,944 when everyone on the sales team is worried about quotas/commish for that month.....Plus they're tired at the end of the day and just want to go home.

GL with the car....my ex-wife has driven nothing but Hondas & Acuras for 20 years and has never had problems.

Not true anymore, Dante ! Buy something like a Honda new, put 15k on it in a year, you can probably sell it for 2k less than you paid. Vehicles ( like Hondas), run for 200k+ miles.

You are wrong about this man. If you buy a new car, as soon as you drive it off the lot it loses about 20-30% of its value...

There is no way you are going to sell a used car to any one for 1k less than you bought it...

go check all the car selling websites and come back with one even remotely close to this

You can't buy it used for 25% off, try and buy a CRV for 25% off with 15k on it ! There was a redesign for 2007, even with that you can't get a 22k 2006 for 16,500, more like 19k.
