Talk about a hot ticket. The Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl matchup featuring the Iowa Hawkeyes and defending national champion Texas Longhorns has reached sellout status for the first time in the bowl's history.

Hosted by the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, a crowd of at least 65,685 will be on hand to watch the showdown between two schools representing the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences. Scheduled for 3:30 p.m. central time, the game will be televised on ESPN.
The largest previous attendance for the bowl came in 1999, when Penn State faced off with Texas A&M in front of 65,380 fans.

The Hawkeyes will be a part of a sellout bowl game crowd for the fifth-consecutive year.

No kidding, who wants to be in Iowa for the end of December? Or Wisconsin for that matter! Then you look at "bad" travelling schools, SC and Miami are the most pathetic, but who can blame them? Arizona schools are also terrible travellers. Part of it is the fan base, but part of it is what better place could you spend this time of year than those places?

Thing about this is the bowls are always tied in with the local community. It presents a problem because New Mexico Bowl's first year they wanted a good crowd, so of course the home team gets picked. What good does that do though for the local community who gets a bowl precisely to bring in tourists and money? Same thing here in Vegas, BYU is almost as bad as when UNLV played in the bowl. But they fill the stadium up with ease.

As of press time, a total of more than 65,000 tickets had been sold for the game. By game time, bowl officials project that attendance could top the all-time Alamodome record for a football game of 65,562 fans -- set when the NFL's New Orleans Saints played the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 16, 2005.

More impressive is the pace at which fans -- a significant number of them from Iowa -- have snatched up tickets to this year's game.

"This year's Alamo Bowl match-up between Texas and Iowa has resulted in the highest demand for tickets in our 14-year history," says 2006 Alamo Bowl Chairman Bob Cohen.

Next year Iowa should get invited to the Hawaii bowl. That one will really prove for good how big a draw Iowa is. Those Hawaii people keep getting socked with the most pathetic teams for drawing a crowd. Only way they ever sell a ticket is if Hawaii is playing, but it still escapes me what is the point of that? If you can't sell tickets unless your local team is playing then you shouldn't have the game.

That would be awesome.............:103631605

Will be attending the Alamo Bowl this year myself and it will mark the 5th straight year of attending a Hawkeye bowl game.

San Antonio, Texas - What do a piano bar on the Riverwalk and a watering hole in West Des Moines have in common?

Both are banking on a big turnout by Iowa football fans.

In past years, Hawkeye supporters have flocked to bowl cities or packed local taverns and rooted for their team. Business leaders are optimistic they'll see plenty of black and gold during next Saturday's showdown with Texas (9-3).

"We're expecting a huge crowd," said Melissa Smith, general manager for Champps, a restaurant and bar at Jordan Creek Town Center mall in San Antonio. "Iowa fans are Iowa fans."

Ben Barker, a marketing assistant for San Antonio's Howl at the Moon, echoed those sentiments.

Howl at the Moon is billed as "the world's most dangerous rock 'n' roll dueling piano show."

Entertainers have already been given the sheet music for Iowa's fight song, "In Heaven, There Is No Beer."

"They're going to be here in record numbers," Barker said when asked what kind of crowd he expected. "They'll be playing that song throughout the night."

That's one reason why Big 10 teams are usually dogs. They put them in bowl games that a smaller school would be invited to. I think the Big 10 has 5 dogs with Ohio State being the only favorite. Instead of posting the SU records of the conferences, the need to post ATS records to get a better reflection of the their performance.

Well the Hawkeyes dont really have ANY PART in that sellout. If they dont sell all of their tickets, then Texas fans will buy them

I would venture to say that IOWA had just as many fans as FLORIDA at the two bowl games they played in Tampa.............and certainly tailgated/had fun....... before and after the game on both occassions.

At the Orange Bowl between IOWA/USC.........Iowa outumbered USC fans by a 55,000---5,000 margin..........and that is being kind to USC fans as the difference was probably more than that.

How could any Hawkeye fan forget...........IOWA thrashed the TEXAS LONGHORNS, as CHUCK LONG set a bowl record for TD passes. I believe the final score was something like 55-17.

That about the same margin that USC beat Iowa by.

It probably doesn't hurt that:
Drew Tate is from Texas and the entire team of Texas is from Texas.

Don't look for the same score this year. I will be in SA for the game saturday. I go every year. Last years game between Mich. and Nebraska came down to the last play of the game.

Club level seats are the best. The Hooters at the Rivercenter Mall is cool as well as the party they have at Sunset Station before the game. It is next door to the Alamodome. hope you have a gret time.

Fish, as a full time gambler I think you mix it up great with living your life. I am just a part-time gambler and am learning the quality of life without it.

Fish, I leave everything open. I doubt it though. Love to travel and many more places higher on my list than Vegas again. Beaches and skiing get my travel bucks these days.
