Which one of these is going to go down as the worst signing of all-time?

The people in baseball are idiots!

They cant save themselves no matter what.

Its like giving someone a $20000 credit card right after comming out of bankruptcy. They cant handle themselves.

Barry Zito is not even a true blue bonifide #1 starter.

He is about the 20th best starting pitcher in baseball at best, and is the highest paid pitcher in baseball history.

What a joke.

None of the above. Chan Ho Park, Texas Rangers.

I can at least understand what the Rangers were thinking with that move.

Chan Ho Park was a highly regarded player, very young at the time, comming off of one hell of a season.

Plus, his contract was barely half of what ZITO is making.

Zito is a nice pitcher, dont get me wrong, but he is no where near highest paid in baseball territory.

Hell, he was the 3rd starter on his own team 2 years ago.

He had a good season last year, not a great season.

This is the dumbest free agent signing in the history of baseball.

Hell, I could even understand the logic behind the HAMPTON, Park and Driefort deals. They did not work out, but I could at least understand the logic.

This move has no logic at all.

Jason Schmitt is a better pitcher when healthy.

I can think of 12 teams at least, where ZITO would not even be the ACE of .

I can even think of a few teams that he would not even be the #2 starter, yet hes the highest paid pitcher in the history of baseball!!!!!

What about Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis. These two will be serving up 500 foot bombs in Wrigley on a regular basis.

Do they make 100000000000000000000000000000000000 a year?

the contract itself is horrible.

but zito is a durable pitcher who doesnt miss starts. and if nothing else, at least he made a good decision to go to the national league and play in a pitchers park. if it would have been texas or something like that, it would have been a horrid signing. but sf is a good place for him. zito is a good pitcher. he wont completely bomb out. he isnt worth 126 million. but he will be like mussina is for the yankees. very reliable, very good, but no cy young caliber

I agree with you, Zito is a nice pitcher. He might win 15 games this year.

That does not mean this was not a really stupid move.

What if I bought a HONDA ACCORD and paid $100,000 for it? I hear its a great car. It would probably be very reliable. It would get me from point A to point B. But would it be smart to pay $100,000 a camery, when I can spend that same 100K and get a BENZ?

Agree 100%, the guy is solid and has won a cy. You could see this contract coming a mile away with some of the other signings this offseason. Who's the scrub the Royals gave 50 mil to? Gil Meche? Chan Ho was given 75 mil or something like that about 7 years ago, give me a f'n break.

All I know is that Boras could sell heaven to God......Have to love to hate Boras...he is the single most pertinent reason for these obscene contracts.....Anyone disagree?

I love how its ok for some owner to make nearly a billion dollars from baseball but when some player cashes in the world is coming to an end. The great American virtue about capitalism doesn't apply to sports I see. If people understand where baseball is getting there money from there would understand that the increases baseball is getting over the next 6 years via TV rights and the sale of the Nationals is going to get passed on to the players. Agents know that MLB owners are sitting on a huge wad of cash this year and making the most of that. Good for them. I'd rather see a ball player get it then some heir to the Wal-Mart empire pocket all the extra cash.

I will be shocked if Zito wins 20 games in more than one of the next 7 years...I seriously doubt he ever wins 20 games again.

It's a Huge contract but it won't look that bad in 3 years compared to what will follow. Zito is a lock to pitch 210 innings a year. I'll say he wins 18 in 2007.

Zito will win 2 Cy Young awards in the next 7 years and will win 20 games at least 3 times and will not finish with less then 15 wins in any of the 7 years.

It sucks the amount of money that's involved, but if the others mentioned are worth 10 million a year just to pitch batting practice at Wrigley, then this deal is about right. Having a starting pitcher get 15 wins for sure is a good start if you want to win a division.

Good contract and San Fransico was probably 1 of the only teams that would go that many years. Probably alot of the would have gone 3 or 4 years, but not 7.

Hot will eat up the National League. That's for sure!
