Born: Sept. 7, 1932 in Creswell, Md.

Resident: Ellicott City, Md.

Family: wife Regina, sons Doug, Gerald, Cleve and daughter Pajeen.

First winner was Our Rocky at Laurel Park in Fall 1962.

Has won seven Pimlico training titles.

Won five training titles at Laurel.

Leading trainer at Delaware Park from 1963 to 1972.

Leading trainer at Monmouth Park from 1970 to 1972.

Leading trainer at Arlington Park and Hawthorne in 1977.

Leading trainer at Gulfstream in 1979.

Leading trainer at Fair Grounds in 1981.

Will be enshrined in the Fair Grounds Hall of Fame on March 9, 2002.

Reached the 3,000 win milestone in 1990.

Trained 1980 Horse of the Year Spectacular Bid to a career mark of 26-2-1 from 30 starts with earnings of $2,781,608 from 1978-1980. Spectacular Bid was named a champion at ages 2, 3 and 4.

Was one of the "Big Four" Maryland trainers: Delp, John Tammaro II, King Leatherbury and Dick Dutrow dominated the training ranks in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Brother Richard and son Gerald are also Maryland-based trainers

Leatherbury has been ill for awhile also. Delp was a great trainer and man. Sad news for horse racing fans. I wonder if Ronnie franklin will be one of the five people Bud meets in Heaven. (Read Albom's book.....LOL!)
