Toyota creating alcohol detection system

Wed Jan 3, 7:13 AM ET

TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a fail-safe system for cars that detects drunken drivers and automatically shuts the vehicle down if sensors pick up signs of excessive alcohol consumption, a news report said Wednesday.

Cars fitted with the detection system will not start if sweat sensors in the driving wheel detect high levels of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, according to a report carried by the mass-circulation daily, Asahi Shimbun.

The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.

The world's No. 2 automaker hopes to fit cars with the system by the end of 2009, according to the report. Calls to Toyota's headquarters in Nagoya rang unanswered on Wednesday, a public holiday.

Nissan Motor Co., another Japanese car manufacturer, has already been experimenting with breathalyzer-like devices that could detect if a driver was drunken. Similar technologies, such as alcohol ignition interlocks, are in use in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Concerns over drunken driving have surged in Japan following a series of alcohol-related accidents last year. In August, a drunken driver collided with another vehicle carrying a family of five, plunging them off a bridge and killing three children.

The incident prompted stepped-up roadside spot checks by police, who also plan to stiffen penalties for drunken driving.

Unless this technology is mandatory, why would anyone buy it?

Good idea in theory. Bad idea if you're trying to sell cars.

The car can be slowed to a halt? That sounds dangerous in itself. I mean, what if you're in the middle of a busy expressway where you can't stop? This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Does the car then call the cops on you ?

The point is to prevent harm.

It would only call the cops, in the US, if it was designed to detect drugs.

The person who would buy this car would probably never drink and drive.

The person who drinks and drives would never buy this car.

So I don't get it. Though I'm sure governments somewhere will find a way to impose this on us.

They are also working on a car that will automatically steer away from another car in the event of an impending collision...this is the future, like it or not...we are losing more and more control of our actions.... the good and bad of it.

I can imagine the gridlock on I95 on Friday and Saturday night. They say 1 in 10 drivers are drunk during those times so imagine 500 disabled cars in a 5 mile stretch

Thank goodness and Toyota. I just can't seem to go a day without drinking and driving anymore. I drink so much I am not capable of making rational decisions, yet I know driving with double vision is not good. I drink before, during and after every trip in the car. I really want to stop, but how else can I ensure a constant supply of alchohol without driving to the store to buy it? Everyday I wish someone could just babysit me and make sure I don't drink and drive. But thanks to Toyota, I will get what I what I need: a car to make my decisions for me. It's about time!
Now I got to run to the store and get more PBR.

They are 8 years too late.

This and the black box they have been talking about a lot on the news recently.

In New Hampshire it's illegal to sell a car without telling the customer that there is a black box in there.

Next will be a breathalyzer attached to the car that you have to pass before the car will start. Give me a break

They have this. I dont know if it went into effect but they were saying all convicted DUI will have to blow and pass to be able to turn the key. That was what I was refering to above actually, hadnt heard of the Toyota deal until X posted it.

If you've been convicted of drunk driving in my province, you have to by law have a breathalyzer installed in your ignition.

Nice 'debt to society, paid' atttitude, eh?

Billsfan: thanks, chiquita! Happy New Year to you, too. Hope you enjoyed the Alamo Bowl!
