Yankees, D-Backs reach deal on Johnson

The Yankees and Diamondbacks reached a tentative agreement Thursday on a trade that would send Randy Johnson to Arizona, a move that allows the Big Unit's agents to get him a contract extension. The teams informed the commissioner's office of the specifics of the trade, a baseball official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

Arizona would send pitcher Luis Vizcaino to the Yankees along with minor league pitcher Ross Ohlendorf and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, another baseball official said, also on condition of anonymity. The Yankees also might receive another minor league pitcher, the official said, and would pay between $1.5 million and $2 million of Johnson's $16 million salary this year.

Teams are granted a 72-hour window by the commissioner's office to close tentative deals, but it was not clear when that time would begin.

"When we have been granted that window, we would be willing to discuss everything with the Diamondbacks," said Alan Nero, who represents Johnson along with Barry Meister. "Once that window is open, we will do our best to work out a deal."

Hope he doesn't push a local cameraman this time during his physical.

Not really strange. Randy hasn't fit in in NY since he got there and with the Yanks about to sign Roger, they have an abundance of starting pitching assuming Carl Pavano is at full strength (a big if). Randy loved it in Zona so he is looking to regain some of the form that he supposedly lost going to NY. Yanks get some talent but not top tier.

Not a stange move for NY at all...for Arizona...this move makes zero sense.

Teams that try and bring in an aging big name in hopes he will regain his old form, it's just usually a bad idea...this will not end well I don't think.

as a yankee fan im 100% happy with this deal. As a RJ fan i think this move will help his career out. He gets out of the cold wweather of NY, and into a warm climate year round. This will help his knee and back injuries, and probly help him lower that 5.00 ERA.

Now this is a stange move.

No, it isn't.

Solid move by both teams here. The Yankees will save about $14 million (which can now be use to make a bid for Clemens), they also get 3 solid prospects. Coming off back surgury a 43 year old Johnson isn't what fits the Yankees right now as they push to get rid of old crabby players.

Arizona has probably the deepest farm system in baseball, so they can afford the prospects. Johnson in the NL probably won't give up a 5+ ERA like he did last season, and will be happier since Arizona is where his family is. Yankees are also pocketing some of his contract.

I agree. His ERA went up by almost 2 runs since the move to the Bronx. As a Snakes fan I would be questioning the logic because he is looking for an extension and we all know he's no spring chicken.

J-Man, so how do you like that move by the O's getting Huff to bat behind Tejada?

What are you talking about. He won 34 games in 2 years for the Yankees. In 2005 he was 17-8 with a 3.7 w/ 200+ K's. Last year he won 17 again but with back problems, hit a 5.00 ERA.

I agree he wasn't a fit in NY (I'm a huge Yankees fan) because he was bad in big games, but was a HUGE part of the Yankees regular season the last two years.

In Arizona he will be solid now that his back is better and he's home and in the NL. I'll bump this thread when his stats are at least:

14-8 3.25 235k

Would just like to clarify that I love this trade. Hard to argue on either side.

"what are you talking about?"

answer

"because he was bad in big games"

ummm...w/ an offense like the Yanks...getting paid #1 starter money...having 17 wins/season & not ONE big win, is unexcusable. Especially w/ his resume.

am i wrong?

He's 20 wins shy of 300...at age 43, he will have to pitch two years...this could get Steve Carlton ugly, as he tries to hang around for 300.

This one could get really ugly, he's just too close to the milestone to retire...I hope he doesn't go on the injured list early, it will be a long two years watching him try and get these 20 wins.

Yes - unexcusable, disasterous? No. Look at his value, NY saves money and is getting prospects. It wasn't too much of a dissapointment, he did win games for NY and was relativly durable for his age. I don't think the Yankees expected his prime #'s.

He won 34 games for NY + we get to shed him and get young prospects.
