Just hooked up the PS3 to my HDTV using the HDMI cable... the picture quality is unbelievable.

One extra nice thing the PS3 plays Blue Ray movie disks but also plays the regular DVDs. Now I can junk my DVD player and the extra remote.

Only thing now is to get a Bose receiver to run the optical out from the HDTV to the receiver for surround sound effects.

Don't get the Xbox 360 cause you need to fork over extra $$$ in order to play DVD movies. PS3 can act as a game unit but also plays movies as well. Good investment for $600 as a Blue Ray disk player runs about $700-1000 alone.:suomi:

I understand that PS3 plays DVD's

but is it an 'Upconverting' DVD player?

that is what you really need now for regular DVD's as Blue Ray is so uncommon.

PS2 is already slated to outsell PS3 this year. And yes, we're only 5 days into the new year. HD-DVD is the way to go. Blu-Ray is still too uncommon. Cnn, CNet, Gamestop, IGN, etc. have already thrown in the towel for the PS3. Worst gaming device on the market.

No, it doesn't do 'Upconverting'. But it beats my old Sony DVD player as the sony only has component out + red/white audio cable instead of digital signal via HDMI. :103631605
