I'm still planning my move to Las Vegas and was looking for some info from people who live or have lived there. Can someone suggest a part of town that is older with more locally owned shops that is low crime and fairly cheap? The city I live in now is not a typical suburb and I'm not interested in living in a typical suburb. No sub divisions, no cul de sacs. You get what I mean. Can I get a place like this and not give up security? Any help would be great, thanks.

heatohio- Why do so many people want to move here? Las Vegas is a shithole. This city is the armpit of America. It's a very dirty place with more subhuman lowlife than anyplace I have ever seen. The majority of people in this city are dirty pigs with no class or manners. They can't drive at all and most people here are in their own little world and don't give a shit about anyone else but themselves.

The only good thing you used to be able to say about Las Vegas was that it had affordable housing. That went by the wayside a few years ago. They get $300,000 out here for an average house that isn't worth half that. There are so many wonderful places to live in this country and I can assure you that Las Vegas isn't one of them.

So why do you live there then? I want to move there for the weather, more jobs and gambling. Here in Ohio we have no jobs, shitty weather and no legalized gambling.

Heat, let me tell you when i was thinking about moving out to Vegas everyone here said it was a bad idea, how shitty it was and there is nothing good besides gambling and prostitution. I can say I have lived here for almost a year now and would not move for anything. The weather is great, I have a great job(non casino) and there is always something fun going on.

I live in Henderson which is in the SE part, I would recommend it to anyone looking to live in Vegas. The SW part of town is not built up enough yet, so i dont think you will like that. I am not a fan of N Las Vegas/Summelin because they are far from work and anything I want to do.

What kind of job are you looking for? There are lots of jobs here other tahn casinos where you can make good money. If you have any questions please email me and I will more than gladly help. I am not like most people who are jaded about living here, mayb because i havent been here for as long but until now I have nothing but great things to say about living here.

gatorhater, could you post about your experience over the past year? I remember last year you posted about wanting to move out there and work...you're fresh out of college or something, right?

Or maybe I'm mistaking you for someone else.

But if not, I'm sure everyone (and if not, at least I) would love to hear about how your first year has gone.

I wish you luck, but my advice is to not set your sights on living in VEGAS long.

You are right, I had just graduated from college and moved out here without a job . It took me two weeks to get a job out here, would have taken less time had I taken a Casino job. I have been here and do not have a complaint. The weather is as hot as you hear in the summer but the other 9 months are about as perfect as you could ask for. The main misconception is that if you live here all you do is go to the strip and do all that sort of thing. I can tell you that the traffic getting to the strip at the times I would be going is just not worth it. I spend most of my time at Green Valley Ranch and consider it one of the nicest casinos in Las Vegas. I am not sure what else you want to know but I would be glad to answer anything. Living here is great, esp where I live where you are clsoe enough to be able to get to the strip but far enough away to have a "normal" life as well. They say crime is bad, I have not had an issue with it, the few blocks around the strip are bad but not where i live.

Thats true, as much as I wouldnt mind staying here long term, i do not forsee me staying here forever. 5-10 years and I will prob look to get closer to some family on the east coast, that is unless my job stays lucrative enough then I wouldnt mind staying.

It is very nice of you to offer some help. I guess living there depends on what you are looking for. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet for a job, my girlfriend works for a homeless advocasy group and will be doing similar work out there. We have a friend that lives in Vegas/Arizona and only stays in his Vegas apt. a few times a month so he will be letting us stay there for a few months until we find jobs and get on our feet. I will contact a mod for your email address sometime in the future to ask you more questions. I have heard Henderson is a nice spot to live in, that is an option for sure. Thanks again and I'll be in touch.

Any others with help feel free to chime in. Thanks

Fish,
I gather you don't reccommend Vegas as a place for a senior to move? I thought Henderson was a totally seperate city. Have they grown together.

Nevada is listed as the fastest growing state in the US.

Arizona actually took over this year for fastest growing
My parents came and saw other areas of Las VEgas and they are planning on retiring out here

heatohio- Fair question. I live in this dump because I'm stuck here and I know it. I try to make the best of it. I've lived here since 1985. It used to be a nice place to live but it's a dive now and has been for quite some time. The growth is completely out of control which makes the quality of living here so lousy.

First, let's talk about the weather. The summers are brutal but I will say the rest of the year the weather is certainly better than most of the country. There are a lot of jobs here. I suppose it's like anyplace else when it comes to pay. You really have to do your homework when it comes to a job search. The home prices are completely out of line so I won't even talk about that. The traffic here is horrendous. There are a lot of freeways but just don't try to use them between 6 am and 9 am or between 4 pm and 7 pm. Don't turn in your out of state plates or driver's license and get ones issued in Nevada because no one else does. Besides, you'll be at the DMV for an entire day.

If you like to bet sports, make sure you have offshore accounts. Sportsbooks here got out of the gambling business about ten years ago. They don't want to take any action. The sportsbooks are there for the tourists in the hotels but they're a small part of the overall casino operation. If all the sportsbooks closed tomorrow, you couldn't find five people in this city that would care because just about everyone that lives here bets offshore.

What makes Las Vegas a shitty place to live is the people here are scumbags. It's that simple. They have no class and no manners. There are some good people here but the majority of the people that move here do so because they couldn't or wouldn't get by where they were before. Las Vegas is a great place for lowlifes and they can come here from anywhere and fit right in with the garbage that's already here.

gatorhater, did you find a good job with your degree? Or just an hourly-wage type job?

Why'd you decide to move to Vegas, anyway?

And what do you do out there? Was it easy to get a good job out there with a degree?

Jaded, dont let BS like this scare you away...It is the same stuff people told me when i was gonna do it.

Face it, traffic sucks every big city I have ever been in, everyone is a scumbag to you because you obviously arnt hanging out in the right spots. Casinos are going to have tourist scumbags, deal with it.

You made no good points in your little rant. Its hot, get AC, nobody said you have to go stand outside in it. Traffic blows every where, people who come from LA and NYC dont seem to bitch

Then you talk about how awful sportsbooks are, I would hardly say that is a reason not to move here. I still bet online in addition to sportsbooks.

Fact is, every city has scum, traffic and some shitty weather....why not do it in a place with as much to do as Vegas
