The part about doing it in the middle of the night that's very unprofessional, IMO, is the fact that they had only one clerk answering the phones who seemed to have no idea what was going on. If you're going to make such a sudden, earth-shattering announcement, you should have enough informed clerks on duty to answer people's questions.
