CARROLL-TO-CHARGERS COMING?
We've gotten an uncorroborated tip from one of our friends in the media regarding the possibility that the San Diego Chargers will immediately target USC coach Pete Carroll if, as has been reported, Marty Schottenheimer is fired on Monday.

The talk is that Carroll would want control over the football operations, which means that G.M. A.J. Smith would have to take a back seat.

But we think, frankly, that the Chargers should take it one step farther and send Smith out the door with Schottenheimer. Smith has done a decent job of acquiring talent, but in a quest to build a winner Smith has picked up more than his share of losers, as evidenced by the string of arrests and other embarrassments this season.

There's also a rumor that Carroll wants $7 million per year to make the jump to the NFL from USC, and that if the move is made it will happen "real quick."

But keep this in mind. Under the Rooney Rule, it can't happen as fast as Carroll or the Chargers might like. Instead, the Spanoseses must interview at least one minority candidate before hiring Carroll. And if the available minority candidates believe that Carroll is getting the job, it might be hard to convince one or more of them to sit for the job.

1. HE was a TERRIBLE NFL coach. I know I am from New England.

2. He knows this and WILL NEVER EVER LEAVE USC.

Never say never but he knows what his meal ticket is.

Would be a great move. Chargers would be a contender for years. Young team needs an enthusiastic coach that knows how to win big games. All you Pete bashers out there know this, he's won more NFL playoff games than Marty has since he became coach of the Chargers (six years now), and had a better record his first go-round than Bill Bellichick. Bellichick was hated and scoffed at too. If NE took the approach that some of you guys who disdain PC do, they probably would have no superbowl rings.

As a Charger's fan I'd welcome a coach that knows how to prepare a team to win and make in-game adjustments. Shoot, I'd welcome a coach that can at least win a playoff game.

Pete and his rah-rah (more suited to college) didn't dazzle at NE.

Good NFL teams are built by GMs, and Smith is one of the best in the NFL. His public undressing of Giant GM Ernie Accorsi (now retired) wasn't his only coup, getting Rivers, Merriman and the kicker for Eli. He's had other solid drafts.

He'll almost certainly can Marty -he had to, guy can't win in postseason - and get a good coach. (Parcells? Naw . . .)

Pete Carroll could easily match Jimmy Johnson's and Barry Switzer's College-Pro Title Exacta with the Bolts, loaded young roster of stud talent.

Yup. People forget 90% of the players in the NFL know Pete Carroll as one of the greatest college coach's in the land. I'd bet if you quizzed all the NFL players half of them couldn't name one NFL team PC has ever coached for. I'm sure some don't even know he was an NFL coach. 100% would know he coached at USC, and Pete has probably recruited a large handful since 2000.

His first go-round in the NFL he was just a young guy feeling his way through the league. His next go-round he will dominate if in the right situation. He still had better success than Bellichick's first go round.

First of all the NFL players would laugh at Carroll and his juvenile antics. He wouldn't fire MEN up with his bullshit, they would laugh at him. Schematically he is a poor coach which is proven every time he plays a tight game and he does not X and O worth a damn. Blitzing recklessly on every down may work against Chad Henne but not in the NFL. Carroll is supposedly a defensive "mind" but his defense has looked very pedestrian on many occassion.

As for the Chargers, Carroll is not an upgrade over Marty. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Hiring that bozo would set the franchise back 5 years. Now, if they are looking to move to L.A., maybe a good PR move. But as far as football and on the field - would be a joke

Marty still has a year left on his contract and will be owed a good chunk of money if fired. Carroll would want a pretty penny to leave USC, and the Spanos family is NOT going to pay GOD 7million to coach, let alone Pete Carroll. Lastly, Carroll is a control freak and wants control. If AJ Smith thought Marty got in the way, Carroll would be 10 times worse. AJ is not getting fired, and Carroll would have no say over personnel here (same as Marty). Too bad Marty had no say over personnel or Brees would still be here and the Chargers would still be playing

Pete, keep coaching JV games and covering kicks in practice. The NFL is for adults

First of all, Carroll is not a young guy. He just acts like one. Actually he acts like a buffoon. Sean Payton is a young coach but he doesn't act like a jerk, he acts like a pro. The Chargers were very prepared yesterday as they were all year. Carroll's half-time adjustment to stop Vince Young was.....? and to put some points on the board this yr vs UCLA with the national championship on the line was......?

Hell, I will donate $1 dollar to get him out of S Cal! He is making a mockery of CFB Recruiting. My poor Gators could really move up with some of his recruits. Seriously, PC should stay at S Cal. He has the beginning of a dynasty and as we know the NFL means Not For Long and the No Fun League. LT:party:

Best thing for Carroll is to be mentioned in all his rumors. Just keeps raising his pay at USC. WOuld be a huge mistake if the Bolts took him. May be better off promoting Cameron to assistant HC and keep him away locked up.

Where do you get this stuff...."schematically he is a poor coach"....

I'll let Carroll's record speak for itself at both levels. There is a reason why you bitch and criticize him about on a gambling forum while he has already become a hall of fame college football coach in six short years and every team in the NFL is trying to get down his pants every offseason, including now the Chargers.

He entered the NFL in 1984 as the defensive backs coach of the Buffalo Bills, then held a similar position with the Minnesota Vikings for 5 seasons (1985-89). The Vikings advanced to the playoffs his last 3 years there, getting to the NFC Championship game in 1987. The 1988 team was 11-5 in the regular season and the 1989 squad won the NFC Central Division crown with a 10-6 mark. His secondary averaged 25 interceptions a season and led the NFL in passing defense in 1989.

He spent the next 2 years (1995-96) as the defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, who won the NFC Western Division title both seasons. The 49ers were 11-5 in the 1995 regular season when they had the NFL's top-ranked defense and then went 12-4 in 1996.

I hope to god the Chargers hire him, I'm going to win so much money off you on side bets you'll be broke.

Wow. Feel free to compare Cameron's record to PC's, especially in college. Cameron may have more to blame for yesterday's fiasco than anyone. How many guys take the ball out of the hands of the league MVP. You have to be an idiot to not find a way to get the ball to Tomlinson, especially when he is averaging nearly six yards a carry.

Never said he was young, the vast majority of players in the NFL are under 30, and most of them think of Carroll as a coaching whiz.

The Chargers were prepared yesterday? Hmmm. Clearly. Dozens of mistakes equates to well prepared.

All you can do is point to Pete's infrequent losses. You always point to the Rose Bowl yet you ride Ohio State's jock like Tressel is the second coming. Sorry fella, Pete's got scoreboard on you, and every other college football coach, in a big big way.

Wasn't he interviewing for some jobs last week? Always seems like a big disruption. Was wondering how much blame Cam was getting for this.

Cam would be taking major heat if the HC was anybody else but Marty. Don't get me wrong, he's a great coordinator, but like I've said before, some guys are just meant to be coordinators.

I've seen his body of work as the HC of Indiana. :ohno:

One of the best assistant coaches was Joe Bugel. Never made it as a HC.
