A bank is owned by its shareholders unless its a private (probably small) bank. A credit union is owned by its members who have accounts. The bottom line is credit union members share in the profits while a bank ships its profits to shareholders.

And the members get more free services, better interest rates and less bs fees than at any bank, because it is about them not the corporate shareholders.
