Question re: Don Best Steam

Hi fellas. This is my first post, although I've been lurking for a while. Seems like the best Internet wagering forum around, so I thought I'd ask for a little advice. I recently purchased the Don Best Premium package, after hearing (and viewing) how well the steam plays have done historically. I am finding, however, that even with this very expensive, premium service, I am not able to get in the steam plays at the good number, other than at one very slow book. The "steam number" offerings at the exchanges (Mansion and Matchbook) are already eaten up by the time I get the steam alert, and the Greek, and even BoDog, have moved by the time I make the play just seconds after the steam alert. I fear that the one slow moving book (in the VIP family) will soon kick me out if I am not able to spread around the steam plays.

Has anyone else been able to get in the steam plays at other books or exchanges, or have I just wasted $600? Any advice is greatly appreciated.....

I have found more succcess playing steam at NON- Don Best books and another piece of advice I think you could use, is too not concentrate game sides but 1st half totals (esp NBA) are where books are slower to move.

You will never be able to play Don Best "announced" steam moves at good #s with any book on the live feed. However, if you know which books are the initiaters, you can beat some outs to the punch. I did this all season on Dr. Bob's Thursday releases, and it really paid off. I always run the chance of either getting cutoff or my limits reduced. Maybe you can hook up up with some of Iceman's slow locals. Good Luck

Steam plays don't do as well as people think they do over the long haul. If you only play steam at credit shops, most will cut you off. They don't want it. I suggest you reorganize your sportsbooks on the screen so that the bigger and sharper shops are right there on one screen. Also compress the rows as much as possible to fit more books on a screeen. You'll start to get a feel for when a line is moving. It is very hard to get plays in if they have hit the screen becuase there has already been a 2 minute delay by the time you see it. Real talant is in leaving your shops open and catching moves b-4 they hit the screen. If it were easy...wouldn't everyone do it?

Sia is a disaster, I'm sorry. They may pay but they have incompetant help and they will cut you off when you win a certain amount anyway

Open up a SIA account. Limits are low but they are slow.

Iceman, Do you know at what point (dollar bet) that SIA will lower your limits or give you the boot?

not sure but I have heard the boot is 35k now. That is when you get up that much. As for the limits, I don't think they lower them I just think they are low to start . It's $220 on hoops totals for everyone.

SIA is a must and should add to your bottom line, there are some minor things there but the great lines are WELL worth it.

The thing about getting down early on "steam" moves is this. You have many options, because you can always get off at a good #. Billy Walters has middled more games than anyone in the history of sports wagering. Good Luck

CapNCash, I laid 4.5 late last night when I found out McGrady came out of the Dallas game. Pretty good spot to be in? Good Luck

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I played them tonight and was actually able to get some of them in at the good number at Mansion (in small amounts), although mostly I was too late. I like the advice about the 1st half lines too -- that makes total sense.

For the poster asking about a free 1 week trial, I'm afraid not at DB, although G&J update offers a free week trial (I found them to be not as solid as I had hoped, and decided to pony up for DB instead)...

Probably not a bad idea to use a local, but I always fear being stiffed by one (at the risk of coming across like a guy who has not yet been stiffed by an offshore book -- which i am!)

My locals were great. They always paid. Especially the old timers......they were straight. Hell I'd beat my one guy pretty hard and meet him in a bar and he'd buy me drinks for an hour or so........I probably didnt even dent his bankroll either. Always got some great line value with them also.

Problem was they didnt offer futures, 1st half or 2nd half bets, etc.....

Seems like it would annoy the hell out of a local guy for someone to be calling up each time (or even most times) a line steamed that you wanted to bet. No? I figured a local guy would have no tolerance for 28 different phone calls to place 28 differenct bets in a 6 hour window (assuming a Saturday).
