Very good decision. Who the hell were they going to hire that would've done better. If anyone should've been fired it is AJ Smith who let Brees walk.
Let's not forget the OV/UN win total on the Chargers this yr was 8.5. Marty should not have been a victim of his own success, heightening expectations after winning 14 games with a QB in his 1st yr.

That was the only proper decision to make.

A.J smith ran Drew Breese, not Marty.

If the Charger had Breese, San Diego would be winning the SUPER BOWL this season instead of the Saints.

Couldn't agree with you more.

My team was waiting for the Chargers to make this decision. You can bet on that 1. We would not have hired anyone until the Chargers decided what they were going to do. And we didn't want A.J. Smith at all and we do need a G.M. too.

How's their schedule look next year?
Firing Marty would have been a retarded decision.

Strongly disagree with those who say that Marty is more valuable than AJ Smith.

Smith, and his predecessor and mentor (name escapes me at the moment, but RIP) built the SD team - the owners, the Spanos family, don't know shit about football, they made their fortune building apartment houses in Callf.

If Dean Smith, son of Alex, opts to keep Schottenheimer, then it's quite possible AJ Smith will walk. Count on it, a lot of teams would love to have him. Then, maybe the Chargers will re-hire Bobby Beathard, one of the dumbest guys ever in the gen manager ranks. Built an entire overblown rep on one draft pick, Darrell Green, back in the 80s while with Redskins.

AJ set up Marty to fail. Good GM's don't do that. We had a Pro-Bowl QB in the prime of his career right here on a team ready to go the SB right now and AJ let him walk for nothing. And worse yet, he tried to spin it as not knowing whether Drew could recover from his injury.

AJ is going nowhere unless someone drops a huge money offer on his lap. Schotty has one more year to erase 14 years of crappy playoff performances with great football teams. AJ has full control of the personnel, which is his forte, Schottenheimer is in no position to raise a beef at this point.

It was the right decision and hopefully next year is the year. If SD avoids the injury bug, they have a great schedule to make another run.

I applaud Marty for not taking the 1 yr extension and turning down at least $1 mill. He is a man of honor and principle and now he is in control of his fate and can go out on his terms. The theory of a "lame duck" coach doesn't apply because the players lobbied for Marty and love him and want desperately to win for him and admit they play hard for him.

Bobby Petrino just got 5 mil a yr for 5 years and Marty is coming off a 14-2 season and is one of the 5 winningest coaches in league history. he deserved more than a 1 yr extension and deserved more than 4.5 mil. That offer was an insult

The Dolphins would've hired Marty within minutes if SD had fired him. Marty will command a lot of $$$ next yr wherever he wants to be. If the CHargers don't go deeper in the playoffs next yr, they will obviously not rehire him, and admittedly, probably for the better. However, if he wins, he will have the Chargers by the balls. He can ride off into the sunset or demand what he is worth.

Nobody in the AFC West (other than Denv) will be a threat to the Chargers next yr, so this is do or die for Marty. The bottom line is Marty did not lose the game this weekend, nor did he decide to let Brees go. More importantly, there is nobody out there who would come in here and do a better job with this team. Marty has completely turned around a dreadful and embarassing team and should get one last shot to reap the benefits of his hard work

Marty didn't turn the team around, the personnel did. Personnel drafted or signed by Smith. Including the trade to the Giants a few years ago, dumping an underperfoming QB on the Giants who were fascinated by last names. It was one of the best draft coups of the decade so far.

Teams may play hard for MS, but they don't do what the ultimate goal is - win the SB. From Marty's direct responsibility for Elway's legendary "Drive,'' (brilliant Marty slightly ahead late in the game went to a "prevent," against Elway for crissake) down to the game on Sunday - THE GUY CAN'T WIN POSTSEASON. His very presence on the postseason sidelines virtually guarantees a loss.

Five wins out of 13 may be great for a baseball slugger, it sucks for an NFL head coach. He's one of the five winningest coaches in league history because like old shoes you're reluctant to toss out he just hangs around year after year, stinking up the place when brought out into the light of day.

If SD loses Smith, they will descend once more to the mediocrity we all know and love.

In any case, it looks like all of Marty's fan will be rooting soon for the Los Angeles Chargers.

My error: it's not five out of 13, it's five AND 13. Phew!

Everyone said the same thing when there was a power struggle between Bobby Beathard and Bobby Ross. Beathard was supposed to be the "genius". We know how that moved turned out. We had the Kevin Gilbride's and Mike Riley's of the world before finally recovering when Marty took over. AJ has made some great moves, but equally awful was his decision to get rid of Brees. Good to see the Spanos family learned from last time. Again, if you are going to fire a coach you better have a replacement who is BETTER to bring in. Pete Carroll would've been a joke down here.

What's really sad is that AJ Smith time and time again continues to show that he is either an enormous jerk or as egotistical as any GM around. Getting rid of Brees was nothing more than wanting to show how smart he was for trading Manning for Rivers. Getting rid of Donnie Edwards (Marty's favorite player) is being done against Marty's blessing. Smith didn't even have the decency to show up at today's press conference.

just reminiscing, wishing Marty Schottenheimer was still calling the shots here. Obviously not just anybody can coach in the regular season. Looking back at this whole mess, what a fiasco. Wade Phillips was and is clearly qualified and would've taken this job in a heartbeat. I firmly believe if Marty were still here, we would be 8-2 right now.

Amazing. Marty had his faults but he is still a good 14-2 coach with a young team. I have said this before here, but how does he get canned and Billick not? Turner has a track record of head coaching disaster. Mary is smiling somewhere.

Actually, he's not smiliing. He was interviewed on local radio down here after the GB loss and he got incredibly emotional on the radio and was choking up. He truly loved the players here, and vice versa, and it's that lack of bond that has them playing like dog doodoo right now

I believe that. Marty was intense and poured his heart and soul into it.
