College Football

Tippett was an All-American DE/OLB at the University of Iowa. In 1981 he helped lead the Hawkeyes to their first winning season, their first Big Ten title, and first Rose Bowl in two decades.

Professional Football
He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 1st round of the 1982 draft.

He soon established himself as one of the top linebackers in the NFL, and went on to make the Pro Bowl five times (1984-1988). He recorded at least 7 sacks in all but two of his 11 NFL seasons.

In the 1985 season, Tippett led the AFC with 16.5 sacks and assisted his team to a championship appearance in Super Bowl XX.

Tippett retired after the 1993 season, finishing with a career total of 100 sacks, 1 interception, and 19 fumble recoveries, which he returned for 75 yards, and 2 touchdowns. His 100 sacks, 17 defensive fumble recoveries, and 18.5 sacks in the 1984 season were all franchise records.

Awards
Tippett was inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame in 1999.

Andre is regularly nominated for voting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but a lack of post-season appearances by the Patriots during his tenure is widely considered the reason why he has not received the required votes for election

Tippett on Hall’s short list
By John Tomase
Boston Herald Sports Writer

Thursday, January 11, 2007 - Updated: 04:21 AM EST

Former linebacker Andre Tippett, the all-time Patriots [team stats] sacks leader with 100, yesterday was named one of 17 finalists for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The five-time Pro Bowler and member of the all-decade team for the 1980s is a first-time finalist. He still holds the record for sacks in consecutive seasons by a linebacker (35, 1984-85).

The Hall’s 40-member selection committee will meet in Miami on Saturday, Feb. 3, the day before the Super Bowl, to choose between three and six of the finalists for induction.

“Deep down, I truly believe that some day it’s going to happen,” Tippett said earlier this year.

His resume makes a compelling case. Four of the six linebackers on the all-’80s team are enshrined - Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Ted Hendricks and Jack Lambert. Harry Carson, who was inducted last year, didn’t make the all-’80s team.

Tippett still owns the Patriots’ single-season sacks record with 18 in 1984. He retired as No. 7 on the NFL’s all-time list in 1993 and was named linebacker of the year for three straight seasons from 1985-87.

Among the others eligible for enshrinement are former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Buffalo running back Thurman Thomas, Dallas wide receiver Michael Irvin and Houston/Tennessee offensive lineman Bruce Matthews.

Lack of postseason success kills his chances. Very good player.

He was a good one...I don't think so though...not the way the NFL elects players.

The irony- had he played on these Patriot teams he probably would have been a lock.

Bruschi will get more consideration, and Tippett was a better player.

I'll give you a linebacker that had a better career than Tippett and should get in. He was a 5-time Pro Bowler, 2-time defensive POY and was in four Super Bowls - Cornelius Bennett.

Amazing Dermontti Dawson doesn't get more consideration considering he was the best center of the 90's. Another very underrated player is Todd Christensen. Great TE.

All very good points FW...the NFL HOF criteria is impossible to figure out....Dawson was arguably as good as any center ever and won't get a sniff....meanwhile Mike Webster is a household name.

Obviously too much emphasis is put on players making and/or winning a Superbowl...........more than should be.

I agree. Tippett belongs, but so do several other players mentioned earlier.

I find that if you have great debate, then most likely no.

Name a name and if you have to think about it, then you already have your answer.

Hall of Fame, not Hall of very good.

He absolutely deserves to be in. He was a great linebacker and overshadowed by LT at that time or he would have gotten a lot more recognition. Tippet was a monster who dominated games and opposing offenses. This guy was one of the best.
