Was reading about Billy Walters, aka Rick "Big Daddy" Matthews, in Smart Money by Michael Konik last night, and the thought occurred to me. These offshore books are really just illegal American bookies that went down there and became "legitimate" overnight. I don't think the US has any jurisdiction over other countries, but I think they just view these guys as all being illegal American bookies, no matter where they are located now. Most of them were booking in America before they moved, right?

The US government fears terrorism and money laundering. They dont give a shit about online gambling and are not spending millions and millions to stop you and I from betting.

You and I use Pinnacle and neteller to place bets, but in truth, they are anonymous, unregulated banks where anyone can move hundreds of thousands of dollars into and out of the US.

IF any US bank said, we are going anonymous, they would be shut down.

So are you saying that there is some merit to the Port Security Bill? Also, wouldn't there still be a paper trail in the regulated US banks, if terrorists were using sportsbooks and Neteller to move funds into the US?

It amazes me that Paypal was US based, did exactly what neteller did and walked away without a scratch.

The Chris Moneymaker era changed everything, IMO.

I have to disagree. They used this bullshit terrorism angle to justify the spending because they had it in their heads that they were going to seize billions of dollars from these guys & stop the cash outflow from the US.

It's a multi billion $ a year industry-and they weren't getting a cut of it.

I strongly believe the ultimate goal is to censor the internet, They will use the offshore sites as one example as to why legislation should be passed to censor certain sites. Once that is snucked through legislation, they will use their newfound powers to censor what they really fear: sites that detail and report on the massive corruption and dirty Gov't doings (CIA drug dealing, 9/11) etc. list goes on and on..

It's more about the people that are doing it than the taxes that they could make. They don't care about the taxes because all money used legally is taxed and helps the system.

Money used to gamble is out of the system and the OWNERS of the money don't like it. They want their money to be used in the U.S.A. where it can move throughout the system. If money isn't earned it lowers the value of it!

Gamblers don't earn money and don't work for it either. It serves no purpose for the Goverment. And as they look at it you already have Casinos, race tracks, lotteries, and stock markets that are all legal and taxed to gamble your money away on.

Sports bettors have no importance what so ever in the overall picture. We are useless in the system.

Deal with it!

All of offshore gambling is such a small number, I really dont think that the gov is in this for the money...

$12 billion in profit if even right would be about $4billion in taxes... That's pocket change for the IRS.

I am not saying there is anything legit about terrorist and money laundering, but think about it - if you wanted to fund terroism in the US, is it easier to move money through unmonitored accounts or monitored ones?

The US govt. used the offshore(1996-2006) in the same way they used the Italian mob (1920-1980.)

Hey Illini you are on the right path.... Government doesnt give a damn about gambling just the money moving in and out of US to other countries. With all of us degenerate gamblers sending money all over it will be easier for them to trace the US to other country transfers

US sees this as a way to nip this in the bud.

lawmakers made the law(s) with the intent to prohibit gambling.

some smart bastards over the years have found loop holes.

it is like a slap in the face.

they are slapping back.

almost every shop offshore was started as an extension of an illegal onshore shop. the feds spent years building cases against these guys and then they all move offshore and then advertise it in the newspaper and radio??? yeah the feds are pissed.

bigplay....... short but sweet, you have hit the nail right on the head. Best and most accurate answer to this I've seen. Hard to find or see the truth anymore in this world, but I would have to say your reason is the closest thing to the truth. Government, mob whats the difference. Not much, not much at all
