Sean Salisbury Might Have Said Something He Shouldn't Have

On Monday's edition of "NFL Live" on ESPN, analyst Sean Salisbury made what I hope was just a massively unfortunate slip of the tongue when talking about Peyton Manning's 2nd half performance against the Patriots. Here's what actually came out of Salisbury's mouth:
"I saw a calmness about him. We've always known he's a great player, but a calmness that said, 'You know what, no need to panic. We'll nip, we'll tuck, we'll go, we'll crunch, we'll Jew, we'll do it all.' And he nickeled and dimed 'em, and Peyton made the play when it mattered."
ESPN's official position is that Salisbury said "chew," but you can hear the audio here, via Pro Football Talk, and to me, that sounds more like a "J" sound than a "ch" sound.

I'm not entirely sure what it would mean to "Jew" your way down the field (of course, I don't know how you "chew" your way down the field, either), but I hope it's not some kind of NFL locker-room lingo that ties into a stereotype that might also have to do with "nickel and diming."

And it's also entirely possible that it was one of those things where you mean to say one thing, and another comes out, or you're thinking of two different words, and what actually comes out of your mouth is a hybrid of the two. People misspeak all the time, and Salisbury should probably get the benefit of the doubt and a chance to explain himself before he gets labeled an anti-Semite.

Sean obviosly cuaght himself. When he said "jew" he meant "nickle and dimed them" as in just taking a little bit at a time, you know, the way jews just nickle and dime everyone in business.

Had he said "colts showed up like a ****** to a party" meaning and one and a half late, he certainly would have been fired.

For those of you who say just give him a break, and there is too much PC in the world, you obviouly do not know the level of anti-semitism that still exists in the world, and yes, here in America.

I agree that this is no big deal, and I hate it when crap like this gets covered at the expense of X's and O's, but -- he definitely said Jew, and I'm sure he meant it. Just issue a one sentence apology and lets all move on.

I agree that this country has gotten too politically correct but this comment is derogatory toward Jews. How would any other group feel if a derogatory term was used toward them? If Salisbury referred to blacks using the "n" word or Arabs as "rag heads" or Mexicans as "beaners" he would be fired.

Yet plenty of people still refer to the Irish as drunks or fighters and no one is held accountable. It's a double standard in our country.

He said Jew and meant it.

He's from my school so it pains me to say this but.... if Jimmy the Greek can be fired for saying blacks were bred to be big (which was historically accurate) then he deserves to be fired for perpetrating this negative stereotype of Jews.

Question: How was copper wire invented?
Salisbury: Two Jews fighting over a penny.

I don't think Jimmy the Greek should have been fired. He was stating a historical fact, not being derogatory. There's a difference.

Another example people use about a group of people being frugal is the Scottish people. In fact, there is still a brand called "Scotch Buy" meaning that it costs less. My dad told me a joke about the Scotts when I asked him what Scotch Buy meant.

Q: How was the Grand Canyon formed?
A: A Scotsman dropped a nickel down a gopher hole.

Of course this is not true of the Scottish people.

not something to be fired over, but on the right track..... However Salisbury should have been fired along time ago, like alot of other analysts. These guys couldnt pick the prize out of a crackerjack box..... Hell I blatently fade him occasionally.
