I say Yes.

The coaches & administration make too much money off these boys to say no. It also will reduce the temptation of the "Bush" & "C. Webb" type of ordeals from happening. Although greed is a killer, many althletes would be more content having some change in their pocket from their schools.

And im not talking 6 digit type of money, just a nice fee for making these schools millions.

I'd put a clause in there to , where kids who leave early and go pro have to pay the full 4years amount of money back within a year of their first professional contract.

Even a nice fee won't stop what's going on. Not saying I'm against it, but it won't cure the problem.

They get a stipend every month for spending and whatnot...not to mention a shitload of free gear.

Oh, and lets not forget FREE TUITION AND HOUSING.

Yes, these schools make a ton of money off of them...but lets not forget that no less than half (and probably many more) wouldn't ever see the inside of a college classroom if it were not for scholarships. Many athletes go on to bigger and better things OFF the court/field, something that more likely than not WOULDN'T happen otherwise.

One can make the argument that they deserve a little more cash...but lets not act like they're getting robbed.

Well...they should get paid because the same institution will have a student pass classes just to make sure they can play on the team but won't give him cash to go see a movie without the school getting penalized. Also look at the salary of the coaches and then you wonder why they wouldn't do what they could to keep the none paid student. Pay-up!!

They already get paid.

They receive a scholarship worth $100K, a very generous stipend for room & board, and have much greater access to academic resources (i.e. tutors, etc.) than regular students have.

Your average college athlete has more money in his/her pocket than your average college student.

And for those that argue that the schools capitalize off of their athletes, think of it this way -- schools wouldn't receive such an influx of dollars if it weren't for the student body, which of course, makes up the school. So why stop at athletes? Maybe the student body should be paid??

I don't think they should be paid. They do receive full tuition, room/board, etc. A kid should have some money in his pocket though, I'd be alright with $100/month or at least let them work for work study or campus employment a few hrs a week.

I would love to see a scholarship worth $100k a year.

I was a full ride Division I football athlete and this debate is always the same.

I think athletes should be paid. Even if it is just minimum wage in the state where they are going to school. The amount the scholarship equates to is less than half what the student-athlete would be paid if he were making minimum wage. Also take into account that the scholarship athlete is NOT ALLOWED to work or earn income while on scholarship, and it is a joke.

I don't think it is out of line to pay student-athletes $5/hour for the time they are required to be there considering how much money they are generating for the school.

I think another question is in order to those that said yes.....

Should ALL college athletes be paid or just the money makers like football and basketball?

unfortunately I would have to say by % of revenue generated for their particular sport

kinda hard to think a QB for LSU should get the same amount as a girl from the water polo team

Title IX has really screwed things up in that regard.

Fuck that!!! I know first hand what kind of previleges these so called student athletes get. I was a student tutor for these lazy ass bball players at UVa during the summer of 2002. These players get free tuition fees, free room and board, a $1100/month stipend, and get a personal tutor like me to do their fucking homework. O, did I mention they get some hot booty ass groupies knocking on their door on those hot summer nights.

All of these things may be true, but athletes are no different than any other walk of life. The ass holes will be ass holes. There will always be those that take advantage of the system no matter what.

I can assure you athletes aren't the only students to cheat. I can tell some stories of just as many crooked tutors as I can athletes.

Isn't it in Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions that the college football players get salaries - and so they play into their thirties?
