Time to put him out of his suffering
-----------------------------
Barbaro has another significant setback <!-- END HEADLINE -->

Barbaro suffered another significant setback in his recovery, forcing doctors to choose a risky approach to try and save the ailing Kentucky Derby winner.

Barbaro no longer is bearing weight on the right hind leg he shattered eight months ago in the Preakness Stakes after undergoing surgery Saturday to place two steel pins through a bone.

The biggest fear is that the bone bearing the weight — the cannon bone — can break.

"We will continue to treat Barbaro aggressively as long as he remains bright, alert and eating," Dr. Dean Richardson, chief surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., said Sunday.

"This is another significant setback that exemplifies how complex his medical situation remains because both hind limbs have major problems."

This is the first time in weeks the right hind leg has been the focus of concern. For months, it was the left hind leg that put Barbaro's recovery in serious jeopardy because of laminitis, the often-fatal hoof disease.

Richardson, in an update released by the New Bolton Center, said.

I think after this long ordeal peple will be more understanding of why they put a horse down after something happens....I know I have learned a lot by this story...I use to think it was so cruel to give up on a horse after what seemed like something so easy to fix, boy was I wrong.

The story has been covered a lot here in Maryland and there have been times when they made it sound as if he was out of the critical stage, only to have seback after setback.

I have learned alot to Jman used to think like you that it was cruel not to try to save them, this horse has to be on big time pain killers and suffer some painful times.

Im not a expert but seems like they have tried their best to save him and its all about the breeding now but hopefully they will do the right thing soon.

They can't even use the sperm if he can't mount another horse!

huh?

why would he need to be able to mount another horse? The sperm is collected put on ice (nitrogen) and the starws, and good for ever.

I have raced Greyhounds for years At Multnomah Kennel Club in Oregon and have had some Champions in my Kennel. However the gathering of Semen in horses is far different in horses than in Greyhounds where frozen sperm has been common for at least 15 years now. The University of New Hampshire is one of the Nation,s leaders in frozen insemination in horses and from what I have read, they gather the sperm by use of a "phantom "
artificial mare which the horse will mount while the Vets gather the Semen. Perhaps someone knows the current updates but I actually believe that very little semen has been gathered so far. We shall see ?

Just to clear things up for the Joe Publics chiming in, artificial insemination is not allowed in thoroughbred breeding. The foals will not be certified by the Jockey Club and therefore would not be allowed to race or be bred. See Section V.1.d

http://www.jockeyclub.com/registry.asp?section=3#main

On a side note, even if Barbaro would live, the likelihood of him being able to mount and dismount broodmares is very, very slim. As cycnical as I know us gamblers to be, I believe the Jacksons are doing what they have just in order to save their Derby winner.

How will they breed a horse that will not be able to mount a broodmare since that artificial insemination is not an option?

Barbaro will not have the mobility necessary in his rear fetlocks to allow for mounting.

If the breeding can never be registered..... How could one of Barbaro's offspring be raced ever ? This is even If there ever was any semen !

It can't. Not in thoroughbred racing, maybe they are making a super duper standard bred horse, hell it may not even be allowed in standard breeding.

I would love to make a wager that there will not be any horses racing with Barbaro blood lines but 15 years is way far off in the future and I might have to have my bloodline do the collecting for me ! :nopityA: :lolBIG: :toast: :money8:

This horse has shown more heart than 90% percent of humans I have met. This horse has endured the worst pain you can imagine, and he keeps fighting. IT IS UP TO BARBARO if he had enough..I he had enough, I am quite sure he will signal for his departure..ect stop eating.

This horse is a fighter, a champion, and a inspiration....MAY GOD BLESS THIS HORSE WITH ALL HIS MIGHT.....Barbaro is an inspiration to more people than you can imagine.

Dammit Barbaro, do it for the kids...Do it for your future kids....

My prayers are with this horse, I have a card from the New Bolton Center which I donated to.....I show my daughter his picture and she knows Barbaro, when I say where's Barbaro? She points right to him.

Harness horses are able to be artificially inseminated. In fact I witnessed the entire process at a breeder. They split samples and used some to inseminate right away and the others were shipped Fedex to other farms to use.

Thoroughbreds cannot be done that way.

This horse should've been put down a long time ago. It isn't noble to keep him alive, in fact quite the opposite. Bouncing from surgery to surgery is not life. Expect him to be put down this week.
