Team Bodog cuts Jamie Gold

January 26, 2007
by Ryan McLane
Bodog ended their relationship with World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold Thursday, citing a desire to refocus their marketing efforts away from America.
"In light of our decision to cease all offline marketing initiatives in the U.S., and instead refocus our efforts … in Europe and Asia, Bodog has ended our business relationship with Jamie Gold," Bodog spokesperson Susan Mainzer said in a statement.
Mainzer said the decision had nothing to do with Gold's ongoing legal battle with Crispin Leyser over the $12 million first place prize at the 2006 WSOP Main Event.
"Bodog has enjoyed its association with Mr. Gold and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavors," she added.
Gold, a former talent agent, secured his $10,000 entry into the 2006 WSOP Main Event through Bodog by promising to get celebrities to play in the tournament wearing Bodog advertisements.
Gold enlisted the help of Leyser, a television executive, to meet Bodog's celebrity quota. According to Leyser, Gold agreed to split his winnings in exchange for Leyser's help and then refused to pay after winning the Main Event.
In August, U.S. Chief District Court Judge Kathy Hardcastle ordered Harrah's to place half of Gold's winnings in a Clark County, Nevada, trust fund pending the lawsuit's conclusion.
Bodog still has endorsement deals with American poker players David Williams, Josh Arieh, and Evelyn Ng.

Sounds that they want to focus the shift away from Jamie Gold.

Since they are still backing Heath, Williams, Arieh and Ng.

Of course, ceasing all offline marketing in the US is different that ceasing all ONLINE marketing, so it may not be a major worry. May be to the good, in fact.

But it's still probable that some of the shops offshore will back off eventually from US clientele, perhaps as a result of pressure from international banks. The US has subpoened the records of four of the biggest finance banks in the world. Including contacts, telephonic records, etc. That guy playing poker or betting a SuperBowl prop may well be a terrorist.

sd2--they aren't doing any such thing, they are just distancing themselves from this Jamie Gold dork. Are they re-shifting their focus by still having a deal with Williams and Ng.

So much crap out there right now about the industry and its this kind of stuff when reading this story and the headline "Bodog Making Ready to Flee US Market" is part of the problem.

It was framed in the form of a question. There is nothing wrong with posing questions - perhaps more of it should have been done in the past. This is not Bank of America or Chase Manhattan we're dealing with.'''

As I added, cutting their direct marketing in the US could be a good thing.
But posing a question is not detrimental.

Are you suggesting that those who were questioning BoS (as a number here did before their demise) were responsible for the end of that company?

Old news that BoDog decided to cancel all U.S. advertising and no longer advertise in the U.S.

Sugarbear, they meant advertising on TV. Internet doesnt matter for advertising purposes.

And if ANY book needs to close, it is probably BODOG. They have been real outspoken in the industry and on TV

Changed the thread title to reflect accuracy and reduce alarmism.

Thanks.

Playersonly the book that needs to stay open is Bodog. They have been doing a number of right things. Hiding, keeping a low profile, keeping quiet etc has not worked in over 60 years. Its about time someone grew a set and went the other way.

Jamie didnt play too well on 'poker after dark'. Looked like a complete fish.

I have watched a TON of that show, and here is what I will tell you

* Phil Hellmuth isnt really as good as you think he might be, but he lays down a lot of hands you probably would not.

*Brunson plays some crazy crazy hands, do you know why he gets away with it?! Best poker face you ever saw.

*Chan is just nuts. Totally owns. He really dictates the play of the table. He knows what you are going to do before you know it.

*Ivey is every bit as good as advertised. He doesnt talk much though. So I kind of wasnt into his style. Mike M. asked him if he could only have one piece of advice what would it be and Ivey said "pay attention".

Great analysis. I'm also somewhat surprised at how good Chan is.

I guess I'm in the minority but I think Jamie is not a total piece of shit poker player as people have perceived him to be. Sure he was a luckbox at the WSOP but even from watching Poker After Dark with all those pros, you still can't ignore the fact that luck plays a HUGE part in these tournaments. For example, Chan got lucky against Doyle and went on to win and Ivey got lucky against Farha and went on to win. So cut Jamie some slack, lets see how he does over the next few years after he pays for some poker education.
