Reading the book "Pit Bull". The story of professional trader Marty Schwartz and he uses that word for the word "bankroll".

Can't say I have ever heard of that one. AWESOME BOOK!!!

I used to work at the Westward Ho many years ago and they would hold the "Grubstake Jamboree". I think it is the only time in my life I have heard that word used in any way.

I believe it had it's orgin in the days of the Gold rush. That's what the old time miners called their "seed" money / bankroll.

Grubstake means to supply funds to somebody that has a business venture with the promise that you will get some of the profits from the venture.

A grubstake is what's left after Neteller ends up keeping out money.

A grubstake refers to the rent and food portion of an investment venture. Normally you have what you need to start or are being seeded, but you still need money to eat and have a place to live. Thus the term grubstake.

You guys didn't grow up watching all the old westerns that used to be on TV, or you would have known that expression immediately. I don't know how many times Gabby Hayes has said it! Never mind, you probably don't know who Gabby Hayes is either!

"Grub" is cowboy slang for food. like "I'm going down to the chuck wagon to see what kind of grub is for dinner"! So someone getting a stake for grub is essentially like a panhandler is nowadays.
