trust me, its natural grass. Coached in the FLORIDA 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in 2006, and won. Very good surface.

Super Bowl XLI turf arrives in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Miami</st1:place></st1:City>

Sarah Talalay | Miami Bureau
Posted <st1:date Month="1" Day="12" Year="2007">January 12, 2007</st1:date>
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p><st1:City><st1:place>MIAMI</st1:place></st1:City> -- The grass on which Super Bowl XLI will be played Feb. 4 was planted in July 2005 on a central <st1:country-region><st1:place>Georgia</st1:place></st1:country-region> sod farm.

The hearty Princess 77 Bermuda has been nurtured lovingly since then and mowed daily for the past six months. In October, it was overseeded with a combination of perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass for extra strength and brilliant green color.

<o:p>This week, it is being harvested into strips measuring 42 inches wide by 50 feet long and rolled into bundles.

Late Wednesday, six trucks -- there will be 40 truckloads in all -- began the more than nine-hour journey to Dolphin Stadium, under the cover of darkness to protect the sod from harsh sunlight.

Early Thursday, bundles were unloaded, and a crew of 20 workers began the painstakingly slow task of laying the strips side by side across the stadium floor, pulling them together, smoothing and raking them.

The process is expected to take 3-4 days to complete, with the goal being safe turf and a seamless look on game day.

"It's the Super Bowl," NFL Field Director Ed Mangan said, explaining the attention to field detail. "You're looking at the biggest sporting event in the world."

The South Florida Super Bowl XLI Host Committee is paying about $250,000 for the field.

In about 10 days, the yard lines, end zones and NFL logos will be added. Shortly thereafter, hundreds of people will begin traipsing across it for halftime and pregame rehearsals, and media-day interviews.

On Feb. 4, it will be just one of the stars of the 41st Super Bowl game.

On Feb. 17, a Monster Truck Show at the stadium will chew it up, and it will be carted away to make way for a new baseball field for the Florida Marlins' 2007 season.

The process of developing the Super Bowl field begins 18 months before the game.

In this case, Georgia-based Pennington Seed supplied the seed for Jennings Turf Farms. The companies have supplied the fields for the past three Super Bowls held on grass:
<st1:City><st1:place>Jacksonville</st1:place></st1:City> in 2005, <st1:City><st1:place>Houston</st1:place></st1:City> in 2004 and <st1:City><st1:place>San Diego</st1:place></st1:City> in 2003. The grass for next year's game in <st1:State><st1:place>Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> already is growing, but the precise swath has not been identified, Mangan said.

Russ Nicholson, a Pennington Seed agronomist, said
<st1:place>Bermuda</st1:place> is used for its toughness.

"Safety is one of our major issues for supplying sod to an athletic venue like this," he said.

"Three-hundred-pound linemen pushing each other is a lot of force."

While
<st1:place>South Floridians</st1:place> typically have lawns of <st1:City><st1:place>St. Augustine</st1:place></st1:City>, <st1:place>Bermuda</st1:place> seeds can be purchased and grown locally. It's just pricier and more difficult to maintain, Nicholson said.

An area of five acres is set aside for the Super Bowl, even though only about 2.5 acres is needed for the field. The sod was supposed to be harvested last week, but heavy rains in
<st1:country-region><st1:place>Georgia</st1:place></st1:country-region> delayed the process. The sod still was wet Thursday, and some had to be discarded.

Known as the "Marquis de Sod," George Toma, 77, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001 for overseeing every Super Bowl field, and he is now an artificial and natural turf consultant to the NFL.

He watched as workers raked and shoveled Thursday. Patches already shone a bright green.

"Wait till you see it at game time," Toma said.
