i'm not a dentist, but my wife is a pharmacist, nothing u can do but take antibiotics and then get it fixed. The dentist won't touch it before you get the infection out of it.

What I wanted to ask is my face is starting to swell up now by my jaw and if this is something that I need to get drained. My dentist called in a antibiotic for me but he could not see me today. Also as strange as it sounds the pain has kind of went away.

Yep, the pain will go away for the mean time. But if you don't get the tooth fixed the pain will return, along with the infection.

not accurate. The dds will provide either rct or extraction at an emergency appointment, time permitting. Much better than simply antibiotic therapy which requires 48-72 hrs to provide 'relief', assuming it will (wont always, depends of the virulence of the micorbes and the spectrum of the antibiotic prescribed. Usually, a broad spectrum antibiotic does the trick, tho). Of ocurse, there are exceptions.

rinse with copious warm salt water rinses. If you begin to run a fever, have dysphagia, or the sweillign gets worse, immediately go to the hospital. Oral surgeon(s) will be on call. If not, hang in there, and showtime on Monday:suomi:

Using the antibiotics according to directions should relieve the grim pain in about 12-18 hours.

Swelling won't fully recede for up to 48 hours.

The dentist can then do something (fill, root canal, extract).

Don't be surprised if he sees you Monday and then doesn't take other action for a few more days while the antibiotic continues to knock out the immediate infection.

SIDE NOTE...Rx poster "DON MELCHOR", often seen in the Costa Rica forums, is a dentist in Costa Rica.

if there is an active infection, it is may be difficult to get the area anesthetized so that is why the dentist is prescribing the antibiotic for you.

correct. Profound anaethesia can be a challenge in a highly acidic environment. With the advent of Artacaine, it's often less of a problem. To get immediate relief of pain/ infection, invasive treatment should be commenced, either open and drain or extraction coupled with antibiotic therapy (especially if systemic s&s of infection are present). Often the reality is this: if the office is 'squeezing' you in his/her schedule, he/she may not have the TIME for begin treatment. He/she will prescirbe an antibiotic and see you in 3-4 days.
