LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Indianapolis Colts' rainswept victory over the Chicago Bears averaged more than 93 million viewers on Sunday, making it the second most-watched Super Bowl and third most-watched U.S. telecast ever, Nielsen Media Research reported.
The 3 1/2-hour CBS broadcast of the National Football League championship from Dolphin Stadium in Miami drew nearly 2.5 million more viewers than last year's Super Bowl matchup, in which the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks, Nielsen said on Monday.
In terms of Super Bowl games, only the 1996 Dallas Cowboys' victory over Pittsburgh posted a bigger TV audience, averaging 94.8 million viewers to rank as the second most-watched U.S. TV broadcast in history.
The February 1983 finale to the long-running CBS sitcom "M*A*S*H" still ranks as the most watched American telecast ever, averaging nearly 106 million viewers.

Great, I'm sure the NFL is just DYING to make the Super Bowl PPV.

Give it a couple of years.

Much easier to sell the rights to the networks and let them take the risk of making money. The PPV days are way off.

If anything you might see the Super Bowl on the Nfl Network in 10 years once everyone can get it, why not keep all the ad money yourself.

I could see that too. Do the networks actually make money off the Super Bowl, or do they use it as a "loss-leader" to promote other shows?

Now just imagine if the Jets played the Bears. It would be #1.

this is just my opinion as with all the people turning in to watch now.it is not about all the people wanting to watch the game.it about people who do not even like football just to get together for parties etc.i bet you be surprise how many after the 1st quarter could care less about the game itself but for the get together is what it is all about now.the superbowl now have become the largest day in america just to have dinner parties and to work on big corp deals like on the the golf course that imo is why the ratings is up for it each yr not so much about the game anymore like in the early years when the forcus was on the game itself........ck
