with the old seafood and meat that they do not sell. I noticed this the other day while I was in the store, They had like a little clearance section for older seafood. Do they just throw this food away or do they send it back to the distributors or what. I'm sure there is some type of market out there for like fisherman or commerical crabbers to use this stuff as bait or what not. Its seems like the stores take a big hit because most of the stuff that they never sell are the alaskan snow crabs and the stone crab claws and the higher priced stuff.

Markup for produce and seafood is 100% because of the spoilage. Usually beef is ground up into hamburger. Always remember not to buy seafood on Mondays, no real guarantee it is freshest until the new orders come in.

There are people who come around in my area and pick up the day-old bakery items and bread. Usually the meat and produce gets thrown out because of health concerns (bacteria).

A lot of stores donate it to homeless shelters and whatnot. Some grocery store chains (Publix, for one) are really cool about this. Publix also saves any dog food that comes in with a damaged bag or dented can--stuff they can't sell but that has nothing wrong with the food--and donates it to animal rescue organizations. IMO, I'm glad to pay a little bit more to shop in a place that does something like this...

grocery stores definately use "spoilage" to their advantage...for tax purposes it is often extremely inflated on their books and used to their advantage

Good point...still, I respect an outfit that does something worthwhile with their "spoilage" rather than just throwing it away....

It's hard to believe how much is actually thrown away. I worked in the produce department at Winn-Dixie near Tampa for a couple of months last year. Part of my job, was to "grade" or go through the produce when I arrived at 6 a.m. I also went through all the pre-packaged product to determine if they were still in date. I would run all the bad product through the cash register and total up the loss and then toss the product. I don't know about hiking the loss to claim a tax credit, but I do know we actually had seminars on how to limit the loss, or rework the product. But in reality, stores don't have enough staff to do that. It's bad (the product), you toss.

Starving in the US? Where? What state doesn't provide food stamps to those in need?

I was downtown yesterday at a little Mexican joint. As soon as I was done paying for my meal a bum walks in and states he hasn't eaten in 9 days. He tells the guy he is hungry but doesn't have money and would accept anything. The worker acts confused and says " you don't have any money?" The bum then repeats his story and waits a couple of more minutes for handout. The workers do their best to ignore the bum. Finally the bum takes his show on the road.

All this took place a half a mile from homless headquarters. I know for a fact there are soup kitchens all over that part of town that feed people without money.

Now our mayor has proposed opening up more day (care) centers for the homeless. Excuse me, I am getting way off topic.

I'm sorry I must have been mistaken. Everything is wonderful in every city in this great land of the free and home of the brave. I should have never said anything.

The official poverty rate in 2005 was 12.6 percent, 37.0 million people were in poverty

What do the grocery stores do...???

Take it back to the backroom, unwrap it, maybe a little food coloring around the edges.......put new wrap on, new label with an expiration date further into the calendar.....

Then put it out for round two!

When someone asks me for money I always tell them that Labor Ready has money for them if they want to work. They'll even take ex-cons. When I was unemployed I went to work for Labor Ready for a couple days. If I have to work then they can too.

I had one guy tell me he already had a job. So I told him not to spend so much and he wouldn't have to ask me for any money.

As far as old food goes, some grocery stores in the Midwest sell old food to farmers for use as hog slop. I remember when we were kids we had to scrape our food trays into the garbage to be used for hogs.

I just bought 2 lbs of ground sirloin.

When I unwrapped it, the first quarter inch was bright red, however the inside meat was grey-brown.

What are they doing?

I can only speak for produce and it gets thrown in the dumpster and I am pretty sure the meat does as well. Too many people getting sick and too many lawsuits. There were if you remember a few produce recalls this past year. Lettuce, spinach. Sales are still slow with spinach even though it is back and safe. People are afraid.
