PHOENIX (AP) -- Charles Barkley said Monday that he won "about $700,000" gambling in Las Vegas over the weekend.
"That was all profit (from) blackjack and I bet on the Super Bowl. I had the Colts," Barkley said in an interview with Phoenix television station KTVK. "I played a lot of blackjack."

In an ESPN interview in May 2006, Barkley estimated that he'd lost about $10 million gambling over the years.
He said Monday that he lost $2.5 million "in a six-hour period" one night last year.

Barkley, who lives in the Phoenix area, was elected to the Hall of Fame last year. PHOENIX -- Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley admits he has a gambling problem, but said Monday that he's several thousand dollars richer after returning from Las Vegas.

Barkley's great...still, every gambler knows to take this sort of report with a grain of salt. It's like the old rule that if you ask a guy in a casino how he's doing and he says "I'm about even" or "I'm up a little" you know he's been losing money...

I think broccoli had Patriots ML when they beat the Rams. He did it on credit and I think it got that guy fired.

Since the ammount was so huge and he didnt get approval.

I could be wrong, but I remember reading something like that.

You are correct. That was Nick Bogdanovich--one time Binion's Race and Sports book director (back before Becky Behnen ran in into the ground). At the time he was in charge of the Mandalay Bay sportsbook and he booked over 500k for Barkley without taking any money or chips from him, thinking that he'd made the financial arrangements with other casino execs. He hadn't Barkley won and Bogdanovich was shown the door...

When a guy tells you he is down over $10,000,000 lifetime and lost $2.5m last time, when he then says he won $700,000, I tend to believe him.

The only time I met him, he lost $250,000 at Mandalay Bay and then tipped the dealer $50,000. Then he went and ate the largest lobster I've ever seen.

Hilarious guy.

I take that back - the other time I bumped into him was at Atlantis. He was chugging Cristal and could barely stand up. It was during MJ's charity event last year.

Yeah, in Barkley's case he's probably telling the truth. I've always been a huge fan--great player, funny as hell and a quote machine. I have this file on my computer where I collect great quotes from famous people...I've got a bunch of Barkley quotes that are downright hilarious...I'll find 'em and post 'em...

Classic Barkley quotes...

These were compiled from various print interviews-my favorite is the "Unemployment is fine if you can afford it" blast...

“This is my schedule: I wake up in the morning, decide where to play golf and drink beer all day”
--Charles Barkley

“I’ve been rich and poor. Being rich is better.”
--Charles Barkley

“Unemployment is fine, if you can afford it”
--Charles Barkley

“You can’t consider sitting around talking about sports a real job”
--Charles Barkley

“Women like men with money”
--Charles Barkley

“I don’t need this gig. I’m rich. This job barely covers my expenses in Vegas.”
--Charles Barkley

“When I was recruited at Auburn, they took me to a strip joint. When I saw those titties on Buffy, I knew
that Auburn met my academic requirements”
--Charles Barkley

“All I know is, as long as I led the Southeastern Conference in scoring my grades would be fine”
--Charles Barkley

“I make it a rule to never listen to people who make less money than I do”
--Charles Barkley

“I don’t like any women sportscasters. I don’t like women doing sports—it just bothers me”
--Charles Barkley

Thanks...it was actually my fascination with the history and lore of Las Vegas that got me into sports gambling to begin with. Bogdanovich's experience underscores what a thankless industry it is. Binion's is best known now for being the original home of the World Series of Poker, or for the Ted Binion murder and the way that his sister Becky Behren ran the casino into the ground after his death. Back in the late 80's, however, Binion's wrote more action than any book in the state other than The Mirage and was considered a place that wasn't afraid to book "sharp" action. Even by the standards of the late 1980's, you wouldn't know it to look at it. The sportsbook was a little stand with a few chairs around it and some hotel room surplus TV's mounted on the walls. Hand written lines were still fairly common at the time, but Binion's really had the look of a dry erase marker board that they picked up at Office Depot.

After being fired from the Mandalay Bay, Bogdanovich was at the Golden Nugget downtown for awhile. I think he's a tout with one of the bigger outfits now, which is probably the same type of downward mobility as a supermodel having to become a stripper to pay the bills...

I played some Craps with Jerome Bettis and Kordell Stewert last weekend and things were not so great for them but they did have the Colts.

Barkley and Jordan were playing BJ down at Harrah's New Orleans together a few years back and each cleared several 100k a piece. Both are fellow degenerates and their combined losses equal a fat modern day NBA or MLB contract.
