MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota Twins catcher and AL batting champion Joe Mauer avoided salary arbitration and agreed to a four-year contract on Sunday with the Twins.

Mauer, 23, batted .347 with 84 RBIs in 2006 to help the Twins rally from a 12 1/2-game deficit to win the AL Central on the final day of the regular season.

Mauer, the first pick in the 2001 draft out of Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minn., was eligible for arbitration this winter for the first time.

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

The deal will keep Mauer with the Twins through at least 2010, the year the team is scheduled to begin playing in a new ballpark.

Would have added another 100 million to the cost and the county tax that was passed to pay for the stadium was capped at a certain amount if Twins want a roof they were told they would have to pay for it.

So no roof I think they will regret it.

Love this news. Saw this kid hit a ball the first time when he was about 3 years old, knew the Mauer family growing up, all the Mauer boys were great young athletes but this one always stood out.....

no roof will be a killer. I do know a guy in the Twins sales group who says a roof is still a possibility but would need some public support and financing. never say never.

there's still a good chance the stadium doesn't even get built. they are running into problems with the land.

I wonder if he'll slack off like Kirby Puckett did after signing his long-term contract.

Other teams have been able to build stadiums by selling luxury boxes in addition to the public money.
