next time you're out to dinner or sitting with some family or friends in a relaxed atmosphere.. do this :
give each person a piece of paper with enough room to write a single digit number (small scrap paper ok). next, on a piece of paper ... write the numbers 1,2,3,4 (obscured from their view !). finally... on a third piece of paper (also obsured from their view) write the following : " you picked the number 3 " or if with two people , " you BOTH picked the number 3". fold THAT piece up and direct them to watch you tuck it under a nearby object... like a candle holder, salt shaker, wine bottle, etc. Again, they should be watching you do that as per your invite.
at this point they are NOT supposed to know what the hell is going on at all. don't hint at guessing numbers, etc..
then for the show... just before showing them the paper with "1,2,3,4" written on it... tell them to get their pen and paper ready and tell them they should be writing the first number that comes to mind after looking at the paper u show them. then they should quickly turn their papers face down in front of them.
quickly flash the card and let them get a good look... you're not like pulling it away from them.
the payoff - have them turn their papers over so they can see what each other wrote... which will be "3" (yes, it will be 3)... and then tell one of them to fetch the paper under the salt shaker they watched you hide.
it's no david blaine, but it's a nice little show while waiting for dinner to arrive.
I've done this maybe 5 times over 10 years and it's 100%. i'm sure it's not going to be 100% for everyone... but it will work for enough of you that try it on someone that you will have them wondering how u did it. human nature is to pick "3" when shown those numbers.. why? who knows? just a good trick.
